Hurricanes at Panthers Game 3
Panthers lead the series 2-0
Series odds: Panthers -650, Hurricanes +475
Florida absolutely dominated the first 40 minutes of Game 2. Through two periods at five-on-five, the Panthers generated 39 shot attempts to the Hurricanes’ 25, with a 73 percent expected goal rate. The Canes pushed back in the third, with 21 shot attempts (to the Panthers’ five) and a 93 percent expected goal rate, but it wasn’t enough to get back in the game.
The Panthers’ second line of Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe led the way. At five-on-five, they had a 13-9 edge in shot attempts, a 77 percent expected goal rate and outscored Carolina 3-0.
Carolina’s goalie Frederik Andersen got the hook after two periods, after allowing 2.27 goals above expected in all situations. Sergei Bobrovsky, on the other hand, turned away all of the Canes’ chances, saving 1.73 goals above expected along the way.
The Panthers nullified the Hurricanes’ home-ice advantage and have now outscored opponents (Carolina and Toronto) 22-4 in their last four road games. Now, the Canes need to channel the Panthers’ on-the-road energy as this series heads to Sunrise.
