Jalen Hurts is widely regarded as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks. The Philadelphia Eagles standout is coming off his first Super Bowl victory and has posted four consecutive seasons with over 600 rushing yards. However, some analysts still classify him as a second-tier quarterback.
Entering his fifth NFL season, few doubt Hurts’ talent. Last year, the dynamic signal-caller completed 248 passes on 361 attempts, amassing 2,903 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and just five interceptions-all while recording a career-high 103.7 passer rating.
Hurts played a crucial role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX triumph over the Kansas City Chiefs, and all signs point to him continuing his upward trajectory. Yet, despite his success, PFF analyst John Kosko ranked him in the second tier of his quarterback rankings-well below Patrick Mahomes.
Hurts is High-End – Just not Mahomes-Level
Kosko categorized the 32 projected 2025 starting quarterbacks into six tiers. The top tier, labeled “Elite,” includes only four names: Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen-in that order.
Despite his impressive statistics, Kosko placed Hurts at fifth overall, leading the second tier, “High-End Starters.” He noted that while Hurts had an outstanding 2024 season, his performance in 2023 left room for criticism-particularly in clutch situations where he struggled under pressure.
Kosko acknowledged that Hurts rebounded in 2024, stating that he “flipped the script this past season, showing poise and control even when things broke down around him.” After a slow start, the 26-year-old quarterback “found his rhythm and delivered when it mattered most.” Nonetheless, he remains a tier below Mahomes.
On the Hunt for a Second Super Bowl
Hurts has faced relentless scrutiny throughout his career. Analysts and fans dissect his every move, rarely letting a single mistake go unnoticed. Even earning the title of Super Bowl LIX MVP hasn’t silenced his critics.
Yet, Hurts thrives under pressure. This season, he’ll have one clear goal: proving his doubters wrong by leading the Eagles in their quest to defend the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
