Katy Perry, once among the most dominant forces in pop music, is reportedly “at the end of her rope” following a series of professional and public image setbacks, and believes her time on American Idol may have triggered the downward spiral.
Perry, 40, joined American Idol in 2018 on a reported $25 million-per-season deal. At the time, it seemed like a strategic move to bolster her visibility while diversifying her brand. But insiders now claim Perry feels the long-running show instead left her overexposed and alienated fans.
“Katy thought she was elevating her career as a judge on Idol, but now she says it left her overexposed and made her a punchline,” one source told RadarOnline. “Katy wishes she’d never done the show.”

Perry, who once made history by scoring a Billboard Top 10 hit every week for an entire year, reportedly feels she has become a “human piñata,” under constant attack from critics and fans alike.
Much of the backlash stems from her stint on American Idol, where viewers accused her of being dismissive and at times rude toward contestants. The criticism intensified to the point where she was ultimately replaced by Carrie Underwood in 2023.
Her post-Idol career has also hit turbulence. Perry‘s latest album, 143, which features production from the controversial Dr. Luke, received lukewarm reviews and suffered poor sales.
The choice to collaborate with Dr. Luke, who has faced serious allegations of abuse from other artists, further damaged Perry‘s standing with fans and industry observers.
To make matters worse, her accompanying concert tour has been met with tepid demand, with several dates reportedly canceled due to low ticket sales.
Adding fuel to the fire was a public relations disaster in February, when Perry and her fiancé Orlando Bloom were criticized for suing a seriously ill 85-year-old veteran over a disputed real estate transaction.
Though the couple said they were simply protecting their legal interests, the optics did little to help Perry‘s already fragile public image.
In April, her participation in a Blue Origin suborbital space flight drew additional mockery, with some critics calling the trip tone-deaf and elitist.
Despite these challenges, those close to Perry say her personal life remains a source of strength. She continues to raise her daughter Daisy alongside Bloom and reportedly finds joy in her family.
Still, not everyone is sympathetic to the star’s predicament. “Sure, Katy didn’t put her best foot forward on Idol,” another source commented to RadarOnline. “But she also worked with a dirtbag of a producer, and made an awful album that nobody bought. You can’t blame that all on American Idol.”
For now, Perry has clapped back at her critics via Instagram, writing that the “‘online’ world tries to make [her] a human piñata.” Whether that signals a turning point or just another chapter in her turbulent public journey remains to be seen.
