Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler brought on James Milner at the end of the 4-1 win at Tottenham as a thank-you for the 39-year-old’s support during a long injury lay-off.
Milner made his first appearance since August as a 93rd-minute replacement for Yankuba Minteh. “It was a thank-you from my side, because he was always there for me, he was always there for the team,” Hurzeler said in his post-game news conference.

“Even when he was injured, he travelled to a lot of away games. He showed great effort and that was the only thing I could give back to him. Of course, I could say thank you, but behaviours and actions show more than words. That’s why I put him on.”
The Athletic revealed earlier this month that Milner, out of contract in June, is in talks to continue his stay at the club after signing on a free transfer from Liverpool in 2023. “I want him to be here next season,” Hurzeler said. “I think we are in a good way, but we are still in discussions and let’s see how he will come back and we continue this work.”
Milner’s 638th Premier League appearance leaves him 15 games behind the 653-match record set by Gareth Barry.
Brighton finished the season in eighth place with 61 points, thanks to two second-half goals from Jack Hinshelwood and one each from substitutes Matt O’Riley and Diego Gomez.
It was not enough to reach the Conference League in Hurzeler’s first season, due to results elsewhere, but it left them within one point and two places of the club highs set under former head coach Roberto De Zerbi in 2022-23, when Brighton qualified for the Europa League.
“I judge the season my way,” Hurzeler said. “We faced a lot of adversity, a lot of challenges, but we always stick together and I can judge the season in the right way. I am really proud of the team, my staff, the whole club. If we had reached Europe, everyone would have said it’s an incredible season.
“I think we did enough to get Europe, we cannot influence other results. We finished one point behind the (club) record. I think it’s a great achievement and we can be proud of ourselves, but there are things to improve, we know that, and that is the challenge for next season.”
