Wenn Basketball-Star Michael Weathers (27) von den MLP Academics Heidelberg auftritt, dann ist Showtime!
Im zweiten Play-off-Viertelfinale gegen die Niners Chemnitz (74:70) versenkte er einen Wurf aus 20 Metern im Korb. Die Halle explodierte, Weathers’ Jubel eskalierte. „Es war einfach ein wildes Spiel für uns“, lachte der US-Amerikaner hinterher.

46 Jahre stand Heidelberg nicht mehr in der Meister-Runde der Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. Jetzt liegt der Fast-Absteiger der Vorsaison in der Serie (Best-of-5) überraschend mit 2:0 vorn. Und kann heute in Spiel drei in Chemnitz (16.30 Uhr, live WELT TV und Dyn) ins Halbfinale einziehen!
Dabei spielt der Mann mit den kürzesten Hosen der Liga eine Hauptrolle.
Stets ein bisschen verrückt, aggressiv in der Verteidigung – und nicht nur wertvoll durch die 18,5 Punkte, die er pro Partie beisteuert. „Er ist ein toller Charakter, der für die gute Stimmung im Team eine große Rolle spielt“, schwärmt der sportliche Leiter Alex Vogel.

Auch außerhalb der Halle gibt Weathers Gas – anfangs zu viel!
Der US-Amerikaner grinst: „Ich musste mich in Deutschland an die Blitzer neben den Straßen gewöhnen. In der ersten Zeit habe ich im Schnitt fünf Tickets pro Monat gesammelt.“
Schon früher überdrehte das Energiebündel gelegentlich.
2019 flog er aus der College-Mannschaft von Oklahoma State. Grund: Weathers hatte erst in einer Bar ein Portemonnaie gestohlen. Vier Monate später beschoss er zum Spaß mit ein paar Jungs Autos mit einem Luftdruckgewehr.
Um über die Runden zu kommen, briet er bei „Wendy’s“ Burger und belud die Wagen für einen Paketdienst.

Weathers’ drei Minuten jüngerer Zwillingsbruder Marcus spielt Basketball bei Trefl Sopot in Polen. „Wir sind wie beste Freunde. Wenn ich meine linke Hand abhacken würde, würde er mir seine geben.“
Dabei sind sie als zweieiige Zwillinge sehr verschieden. Marcus ist ruhiger, vier Zentimeter größer und mit 98 Kilo knapp 20 (!) Kilo schwerer als der aufgedrehte Michael. Er erzählt: „Wir haben als Kinder immer gegeneinander gespielt. Es hat immer den Ehrgeiz angestachelt. Das hat uns zu professionellen Basketball-Spielern gemacht. Wir wollen nie verlieren und jeden Tag unser Bestes geben.“
