The Florida Panthers are on the brink of advancing to their third consecutive Stanley Cup Final. Florida put together a five-goal third period to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes, 6-2, in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final.

In a game that was tied 1-1 when the third period began, the Panthers offense exploded with four different players finding the back of the net. Panthers forward Jesper Boqvist scored just 89 seconds into the third period as he capitalized on a Hurricanes neutral zone turnover.

Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola and forward Aleksander Barkov produced two-goal showings in Game 3. Mikkola also scored the game’s first goal and extended his point streak to three consecutive games since the Eastern Conference Final began. It was an impressive performance for a Panthers team that was without star winger Sam Reinhart, who missed Saturday’s contest due to a knee injury.

On the other side of the bracket, the Edmonton Oilers probably feel like they let Game 1 of the Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars get away from them. Initially holding a 3-1 lead, the Oilers let the Stars back in through a series of power play goals, and a brawl after the final seconds ticked off the clock was an ugly way to end the game. Emotions were clearly high, but it was up to the Oilers to regroup ahead of another game on the road.

Regroup they did. Oilers’ goalie Stuart Skinner made 25 saves and recorded his third shutout of the season just a couple of nights after allowing five goals to pull the series even at 1-1. Edmonton is no stranger to playing from behind in these Stanley Cup playoffs, and that grit was on display again Friday night with a path to the finals still in sight.

Real Madrid confirm Xabi Alonso as new head coach

Real Madrid have confirmed Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. The former Spain international midfielder, 43, has signed a three-year contract after leaving Bayer Leverkusen, having spent two and a half years there in what was his first senior head coaching role.Alonso replaces Carlo Ancelotti, the five-time Champions League winner, who has departed the Bernabeu after a second spell to become head coach of the Brazil national team.AdvertisementAlonso’s first games in charge will come at the Club World Cup which begins in the United States next month, with Madrid drawn in Group H alongside Al Hilal, Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg. In announcing his departure from Leverkusen, Alonso said it was the “right moment” to leave a year on from guiding them to the Bundesliga title — a first in their history — and the DFB-Pokal as part of an unbeaten domestic […]

Miguel Amaya exits with injury in Cubs loss, a blow to one of MLB’s best catching duos

Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya exited in the fifth inning of Saturday’s 6-4 loss to the Reds in Cincinnati with a left oblique strain, a blow to one of the best catching duos in baseball. After the game, manager Craig Counsell told media in Cincinnati that Amaya would be headed to the injured list.It wasn’t long ago that the Cubs’ catching situation appeared irreparable, with Amaya’s development seemingly stalled. At the start of last July, the position was producing a 32 wRC+ for the team, 29th in baseball. The combined minus-1.9 fWAR was dead last.Advertisement“Those numbers, when you’re at the bottom of the league, that just hurts,” Counsell said earlier this season. “That hurts team offense, for sure. At that position, when you can be a real difference maker offensively, that’s impactful. No question about it.”Team president Jed Hoyer searched for […]

Marcelo Mayer’s chaotic MLB debut: Lost keys, a long car ride and a standing ovation

BOSTON — Early Saturday as the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox prepared to play a doubleheader at home, manager Chad Tracy called Marcelo Mayer into his office. He didn’t have Mayer in the lineup for the first game. The reason? The big-league club was awaiting word on third baseman Alex Bregman’s MRI. An injury might create a spot on the MLB roster. Not long after, Mayer got a second call into Tracy’s office.
