Shedeur Sanders may have been a Day 3 draft pick, but the spotlight shining on him feels more like that of a first-round franchise quarterback. The new Cleveland Browns signal-caller is now working to silence distractions and prove he belongs at the professional level.
As the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, Shedeur has grown up under immense pressure and public scrutiny.
That attention has only intensified now that he’s part of an NFL quarterback room in Cleveland that includes Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. While the competition is fierce, it’s not just the battle for a starting role that’s drawing headlines-it’s the rumors off the field.
Over the weekend, reports began circulating that Sanders had bought a custom olive-green Rolls-Royce Phantom worth over $500,000. The claim seemed plausible to some, considering Sanders‘ well-known taste for luxury and the wealth he accrued during college through NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals. But others raised eyebrows at the idea, especially in light of his rookie contract.
Strong Chance Browns Start 0-5 This Season
Shedeur, selected 144th overall in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, signed a four-year, $4.64 million deal with the Browns. If the reports about the car were true, it would suggest he spent over 10 percent of his total contract-and nearly half of his guaranteed signing bonus-before playing a single snap in the league.
Sanders calls out false narratives as he locks in on football
Sanders didn’t wait long to clear the air. On Monday, he took to X to directly address the reports about his supposed big-ticket purchase.
“Another lie…. I’m focused on my team not a car purchase,” wrote Sanders.
The 22-year-old quarterback appears determined to shift the conversation away from material distractions and back to football. While he’s been known in the past for wearing diamond chains and showcasing expensive watches-including one that famously inspired his touchdown celebration-Sanders now appears to be treating his rookie season with a different level of intent.
In a recent interview with SportsCasting, he offered insight into his current mindset and priorities.
“I’ve mainly just been focusing on the team, everybody that’s currently around me, the coaches on the team,” Sanders said. “I haven’t really been on my phone much or talking to many people. I really don’t even talk to my family. It’s one of those situations where I just have to lock in, stay focused on what’s present now.”
