Las autoridades chinas han abierto una investigación después de que un parapentista fuese arrastrado por una nube y alcanzase una altitud de más de 8.500 metros en el oeste del país, un incidente al que logró sobrevivir pese a las extremas condiciones.
El parapentista despegó el pasado sábado desde una región situada a una altitud superior a los 3.000 metros, en las montañas de Qilian, ubicadas entre las provincias occidentales de Qinghai y Gansu, informó el diario local Global Times.
Durante el vuelo, una avería en el equipo impidió el control del aparato, lo que provocó que fuese arrastrado por una nube hasta los 8.598 metros de altitud, casi la altura del monte Everest. Todo el incidente fue grabado en vídeo por el deportista.

Las imágenes muestran al parapentista afectado por congelaciones visibles, aunque permaneció consciente durante el trayecto y logró maniobrar el parapente hasta efectuar un aterrizaje seguro, según la prensa local, que citó declaraciones del afectado en las que aseguraba haber experimentado síntomas de hipoxia y frío extremo en las manos.

Un parapentista experimentado, de apellido Ou y citado por los medios del país asiático, explicó que los vuelos a gran altitud requieren equipamiento especializado para bajas temperaturas, dado que a 2.000 metros el clima ya es muy frío.
Ou indicó que a 8.000 metros la temperatura puede alcanzar los -40 grados centígrados, y que los niveles de oxígeno son críticamente bajos.

También señaló que, aunque se han registrado casos de personas absorbidas por nubes hasta altitudes de entre 6.000 y 7.000 metros, pocos sobreviven a tales condiciones.
Las autoridades están examinando posibles infracciones administrativas vinculadas al vuelo.
Pese a que el parapentista contaba con una licencia válida para la práctica de este deporte, no presentó el plan de vuelo requerido para esa jornada ni obtuvo autorización previa para utilizar el espacio aéreo del lugar de despegue.
