Tsitsipas byl v duelu s kvalifikantem jasným favoritem. Vždyť i sázkové kanceláře nabízely vítězství třiadvacetiletého Itala v kurzu 8:1. Jenže Gigante si ze slavného soka nedělal těžkou hlavu a po prvním brejku z deváté hry úvodní sadu sebevědomě doservíroval.
Řekovi příznivci si v tu chvíli jistě vzpomněli na loňské Tsitispasovo trápení s Giganteho krajanem Arnaldim, který tehdy také proti finalistovi Roland Garros 2021 získal úvodní set. Podobnost mezi oběma zápasy pokračovala i ve druhém dějství, jež došlo do dramatické koncovky. Tu ovládl Tsitsipas a srovnal.
Jenže místo očekávané dominance řeckého tenisty publikum na dvorci Suzanne Lenglenové užasle sledovalo nebojácný výkon římského rodáka. Gigante ve třetí sadě dominoval a rychlý brejk získal i ve čtvrté. Tsitsipas se sice v samém závěru nadechl k náporu, ale žádný z osmi brejkbolů nevyužil, a tak se v Paříži urodila gigantická senzace.

Gigante po utkání pobavil diváky na druhém největším kurtu v areálu Rolanda Garrose. „Vážně je to pravda? Opravdu se to stalo?“ nemohl uvěřit tenista, jenž ve druhém kole posledního Masters před pařížským grandslamem v Římě nestačil na Jakuba Menšíka.
„Je složité čelit soupeři, kterého moc neznáte. Ale hrál skvěle. V klíčových momentech zahrál výjimečně,“ vysekl poklonu vítězi Tsitsipas.
