Týmová soutěž mezi Evropou a výběrem světa byla pojmenována po Rodu Laverovi. Federer, jehož velkým vzorem australská legenda je, čerpal inspiraci u golfového Ryder Cupu. Projekt odstartoval v září 2017 v pražské O2 areně.
Vydařily se i následující ročníky v Chicagu, Ženevě, Bostonu a před třemi lety v Londýně. Právě v anglické metropoli se v deblu s Rafaelem Nadalem loučil Federer s kariérou. A odchod dvacetinásobného grandslamového šampiona jako kdyby předznamenal pád Laver Cupu.
Klání v roce 2023 ve Vancouveru i loni v Berlíně totiž ani zdaleka nedosahovala zájmu předchozích ročníků. Televizní sledovanost výrazně klesla, sehnat vstupenky přímo do kanadské Rogers Areny, případně berlínské Uber Areny nebyl problém.
Bez švýcarské superstar rázem utrpěla i kvalita hráčského pole. Ve Vancouveru se dostala do hry i tehdejší světová čtyřiačtyřicítka Francouz Fils, což byla v předchozích ročnících věc v evropské sestavě vskutku nemyslitelná.
A tak není divu, že poslední dvě klání Laver Cupu skončila v červených číslech. Ve Vancouveru mělo jít o částku 1,8 milionu švýcarských franků (48 milionů korun), loni v německé metropoli 1,5 milionu švýcarských franků (40 milionů korun).
Podle lichtenštejnského listu Vaterland byly ztráty posledních dvou ročníků vykompenzovány finanční injekcí od tajného dárce. Tím by dle informací Vaterlandu měl být právě Federer.
Poslední ročník se Švýcarovou účastí v londýnské O2 areně přitom vykázal zisk přibližně 93 milionů korun. Je veřejným tajemstvím, že právě z finančních důvodů byl při volbě pořadatele Laver Cupu pro příští rok zvolen po čtyřech letech opět Londýn, kde je o bílý sport tradičně velký zájem. Deváté soupeření mezi Evropou a výběrem světa se letos uskuteční v kalifornském San Franciscu.
Celý projekt přitom začal s velkou slávou v Praze. A v hlavní roli nebyl nikdo jiný než Federer, jenž vlastní majetkový podíl ve společnosti Team 8, která za zrodem Laver Cupu stojí.

Pompézní zahájení akce na Staroměstském náměstí, pinkání Federera s Tomášem Berdychem na Vltavě a netradiční, do šedé až černé barvy oděný kurt.
To všechno ve spojení s parádní tenisovou bitvou, která vyvrcholila dechberoucím soubojem Federera s Nickem Kyrgiosem, přivádělo fanoušky do extáze. „Byli jsme svědky nádhery,“ líčil tehdy ředitel O2 areny Robert Schaffer.
