Aus der sportlichen Zweitklassigkeit zurück auf die große europäische Bühne!
Nach zwei Jahren bei Al-Ahli in Saudi-Arabien steht Gabri Veiga (23) vor einer Rückkehr nach Europa, den spanischen U21-Nationalspieler zieht es zum FC Porto.
Transfer-Insider Fabrizio Romano schreibt auf X, dass sich die Verhandlungen in der Endphase befinden würden und nur noch letzte Details zu klären sind. Laut „Foot Mercato“ soll die Ablösesumme rund 15 Millionen Euro betragen. Porto hofft dem Vernehmen nach, Veiga schon bei der Klub-WM (14. Juni bis 13. Juli) einsetzen zu können.
Veiga spielte sich in der Saison 2022/23 bei Celta Vigo (elf Tore, vier Vorlagen in 36 La-Liga-Spielen) in der spanischen Liga ins Rampenlicht und erreichte mit der spanischen Auswahl bei der U21-EM im Jahr 2023 das Finale (0:1 gegen England).
Dem spanischen Mega-Talent sollen danach Angebote von Paris St.-Germain, Neapel, Man City und den spanischen Top-Klubs vorgelegen haben. Doch stattdessen wechselte der offensive Mittelfeldspieler für 30 Millionen Euro nach Saudi-Arabien zu Al-Ahli, unterschrieb einen Vertrag bis 2026 und kassierte rund 12,5 Mio. Euro im Jahr.
Einer konnte den Wechsel damals überhaupt nicht nachvollziehen: Toni Kroos (35). Der Ex-Real-Star nannte den Schritt von Veiga nach Saudi-Arabien „peinlich“, sagte: „So ein Einschnitt in seine sportliche Karriere, seine Ansprüche nur wegen des Geldes so runterzuschrauben, davon bin ich kein Fan. Das ist ein unfassbar schlechtes Vorbild für ganz viele junge Jugendspieler, dass da Geld die Motivation ist.“
[–>Für Al-Ahli bestritt Veiga in den vergangenen zwei Jahren insgesamt 66 Pflichtspiele, dabei erzielte er zwölf Tore und gab zehn Assists. Erst vor Kurzem gewann er mit der Mannschaft von Trainer Matthias Jaissle (37) die asiatische Champions League.
Nun der Schritt zurück nach Europa. In der abgelaufenen Saison landete Porto abgeschlagen hinter Meister Sporting Lissabon und Vizemeister Benfica nur auf Platz drei und verpasste somit die Qualifikation für die Champions League. Allerdings starten sie in der kommenden Spielzeit in der Europa League.
