Arrascaeta comemora gol no Maracanã (Adriano Fontes/Flamengo)

Ohio State’s Ryan Day makes case for Big Ten deserving ‘at least four’ automatic College Football Playoff bids

The Big Ten and SEC have spent the offseason lobbying for an expanded College Football Playoff featuring multiple automatic bids for each conference, potentially up to four apiece for themselves. That is music to the ears of Ohio State coach Ryan Day, who would stand to benefit greatly from that restructuring of the CFP selection process considering his program perennially stands in the Big Ten's top echelon. Day has been an outspoken proponent of the multi-automatic bid model as it picked up traction this spring.Leaders in the Big Ten and SEC reportedly favor a playoff in which their leagues receive four guaranteed berths while the ACC and Big 12 hold two each. Their proposals also reward the highest-ranked Group of Five champion with a bid and Notre Dame with an automatic bracket spot if it ranks inside the top 14 […]

FIFA’s Club World Cup architect on the tournament, backlash and its future

LOS ANGELES — Inside a quaint courtyard area at the five-star Maybourne Hotel in Beverly HIlls, FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström sips an espresso, then another, while he proudly discusses the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup. Grafström, 45, was one of the chief architects behind the expanded format. The Thunder are a potential NBA dynasty, and their success can be traced back to losing Rashard Lewis in 2007

Dynasties aren't born overnight. They take time to germinate. In the case of the Oklahoma City Thunder, it took almost 18 years. Let's go back to 2007 and travel around 2,000 miles northwest. Clay Bennet has just purchased the Seattle Supersonics and hired Sam Presti to run the team. Almost immediately, he sets about making splashy moves. He drafts Kevin Durant. He trades Ray Allen to the Celtics. He's lauded for giving his team one of the brightest futures in all of basketball, which he did, but not in the way it seemed. The most important move Presti made that summer involved a free agent who hasn't played in the NBA for more than a decade. Rashard Lewis was an All-Star for the Sonics, but they were rebuilding and he was about to become one of the most expensive players in […]

NBA Europe is coming but British basketball is bitterly divided. What will it mean?

There is potentially little more than a year before the NBA launches a new professional basketball league in Europe in partnership with FIBA, the sport’s governing body — and the United Kingdom is prominent in their sights.“I’d say it’s the single biggest opportunity (in Europe),” said George Aivazoglou, the NBA’s managing director for Europe and the Middle East (EME), speaking on stage at SportsPro Live at London’s Kia Oval last month.AdvertisementDetails of the proposed new league are not yet fully defined, but the NBA’s laser-like focus on having teams in major European cities has been clear from the outset.
