Přestože měl v superbohatém klubu k dispozici takřka neomezený rozpočet a mohl si ukázat skoro na jakoukoliv posilu v rámci KHL, v základní části uplynulé sezony skončil v Západní konferenci na sedmém místě a v play off se pakoval už po prvním kole.
Rotenberg sice vždy dokázal vahou své osobnosti přitáhnout k SKA mediální pozornost, jenže klub pod jeho vedením nedosáhl navzdory obřím investicím na žádný úspěch.
