Ryan Day demands key changes to college football playoff format

With the expanded 12-team format now in place, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has already made an impact by leading the Buckeyes to a national championship. But as the playoff looks toward further changes, Day delivers a strong message: the Big Ten needs more automatic qualifiers.

In an interview with ESPN, Day stated that the Big Ten-now featuring 18 teams-deserves at least four automatic bids. He argues the level of talent across the conference is simply too strong to be overlooked.

A wild take! Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day predicts the Super Bowl LIX winner

“We have some of the best programs in the country”

“We’re in the Big Ten, and we have some of the best programs in the country,” Day told ESPN. “I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers.” His point gains weight considering Ohio State is scheduled to face Texas this year in a major non-conference showdown.

Day explained that without guaranteed playoff spots, teams are less motivated to schedule big non-conference games. “We play nine conference games in the Big Ten. The SEC doesn’t. So it’s not equal,” he added.

More games, more injuries… and fewer players?

Another concern Day raised involves player health and roster depth. With the season potentially stretching to 16 or even 17 games, he believes current roster sizes are insufficient. He proposes increasing the roster limit from 105 to 120 players.

Unlike the NFL, where teams can sign free agents or use waivers to replace injured players, college teams don’t have that option. “That puts us at a disadvantage,” Day said.

Automatic qualification: a decision that can’t wait

Day’s proposals come as the CFP committee already discusses conference-based automatic bids. Without thoughtful changes, the playoff could see top programs entering the postseason with depleted rosters.

Ryan Day’s message is clear: if college football wants a fair and competitive playoff, structural adjustments are urgently needed.

UFC 316 results, highlights: Kayla Harrison wins UFC title, faces off with Amanda Nunes after beating Pena

Getty Images Kayla Harrison has hit the jackpot. The two-time Olympic champion added more gold to her trophy case, winning the UFC women's bantamweight championship and setting up a valuable fight with soon-to-be Hall of Famer Amanda Nunes. Despite being the challenger, Harrison entered UFC 316 as the biggest betting favorite on the card. The Olympic judoka lived up to her reputation, dominating two-time UFC champion Julianna Pena from bell to bell. In Round 2, Harrison latched onto a kimura, wrenching Pena's arm and shoulder back. There were only seconds left in the round, but Pena frantically tapped.  "This is for anyone who's ever felt hopeless, who's wanted to quit or give up," Harrison said during her post-fight interview, referring to her difficult weight cut. "I'll tell you what, on Thursday, I wanted to quit and give up."You gotta go to […]

Keyshawn Davis ejected from building after he and brother Keon allegedly jumped another fighter in locker room

What was already a horrible weekend for unbeaten lightweight Keyshawn Davis and his pair of boxing brothers took an even darker turn on Saturday night at Scope Arena in their native Norfolk, Virginia. On Friday, the 26-year-old Davis (13-0, 9 KOs) missed weight by 4.3 pounds for his WBO 135-pound title defense against Edwin De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) and was accused by many, including promoter Top Rank, of not attempting to cut the extra weight. Because of that, De Los Santos decided against going forward with the fight, which led to the cancellation of the main event and Top Rank being forced to pay De Los Santos his purse. Things got worse for the trio of brothers, nicknamed "DB3," when Davis' older brother, 28-year-old Kelvin Davis (15-1, 8 KOs), suffered his first pro defeat via majority decision to Nahir Albright […]

Fever vs. Sky score: Indiana crushes Chicago without Caitlin Clark in first WNBA game at United Center

CHICAGO -- The second matchup of the season between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky was just as lopsided as the first, and this time devoid of drama. The Fever never trailed, as they cruised to a 79-52 victory on CBS in the first regular season WNBA game aired on primetime on broadcast TV. This was also the first WNBA game played at the famed United Center. After struggling in their first two games without star guard Caitlin Clark (quad strain), the Fever have now won their last two outings to get back to .500 on the season at 4-4. Kelsey Mitchell led the way in the scoring department with 17 points, but this was a true team effort for the Fever. Four different players scored in double figures, and seven had at least six points. They also tied their season-high with […]

Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony crushes 497-foot grand slam in Triple-A with potential call up looming

At some point soon -- I don't know when exactly but soon -- the Boston Red Sox will call up top prospect Roman Anthony, and turn him loose on the American League. Until that happens, Anthony will continue terrorizing pitchers in Triple-A. Anthony clobbered a titanic 497-foot grand slam against the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday night. It left his bat at 115.6 mph. That is the third longest minor-league home run tracked by Statcast since they started tracking the minors in 2021. Only two levels -- Triple-A and Low Class-A -- are tracked, but that's still a lot of games and a lot of home runs. Jo Adell hit a 514-foot bomb in Triple-A in June 2023 and Peyton Burdick hit a 500-footer in Triple-A last May.The longest major league home run of the Statcast era (since 2015) is a 505-foot […]
