The U.S. Open is known for visiting the most challenging golf courses in the country, and the 2025 U.S. Open is no exception. Oakmont Country Club, located outside of Pittsburgh, will host the third major of the season beginning on Thursday, June 12. Bryson DeChambeau won his first major title at the 2020 U.S. Open and is the defending champion after winning the tournament again last year. Going back to 2009, 12 of the last 16 U.S. Open champions had never previously won a major. 2025 U.S. Open predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2025 U.S. Open: Rory McIlroy, a past U.S. Open champion and the third-favorite at +1100, stumbles and falls all the way out of the top five. McIlroy was the talk of the golf world in April when he won the Masters, finally breaking through to complete his career grand slam.
There hasn’t been much to like about his game since that point, however. He and Shane Lowry finished T12 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans the next week despite being substantial favorites. McIlroy then finished T7 at the Truist Championship, T47 at the PGA Championship and then missed the cut at last week’s RBC Canadian Open. He’s not a strong pick to win it all at this number, and there are far better values in the 2025 U.S. Open field. See who else to fade here.
Another surprise: Patrick Cantlay, a 45-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. There have been nine major championships contested in the Northeastern United States since the start of 2013, and Cantlay has performed well in two of them. He finished T3 in the 2019 PGA Championship and T9 in the 2023 PGA Championship, which were both held in New York.
Cantlay is an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour and has recorded three top-10 finishes so far this season. He is still seeking his first major title, but he has made the cut in 11 of his last 12 appearances. The 2021 FedEx Cup champion is flying under the radar due to his lack of major victories, but the numbers suggest he will get over the hump eventually. See who else to pick here.
