Los Major suelen ser torneos con muchísima tensión por lo que significan para los jugadores. Tanto a nivel de puntos como en prize money, son pruebas de gran importancia dentro del calendario y es habitual ver muchas sorpresas en cada jornada. Sin embargo, el de Roma está siendo especialmente raro en cuanto a que muchas de las principales parejas están cayendo antes de la cuenta.
En el lado masculino, el mayor bombazo cayó con la eliminación de Cardona y Augsburger en dieciseisavos, pero los batacazos no han acabado ahí y es que la pareja seis tampoco ha conseguido el pase a los cuartos de final. Juan Tello y Martín Di Nenno no han podido con unos espectaculares Leal y Guerrero. Con un contundente 7-6/6-2, han pasado de ronda y se medirán a Yanguas y Nieto, que esta vez sí han hecho los deberes.
Coello y Tapia sí consiguieron el pase a cuartos.
Cabe destacar que el ‘Renga’ se lesionó en el segundo set, cuando el marcador iba 4-2 en favor de la dupla española, lo cual impidió una posible remontada. Un problema físico más esta semana después de lo de Libaak y la rotura del tendón de aquiles de Thomas Leygue. Lo de Di Nenno parece solamente una torcedura, pero habrá que ver cómo se recupera de cara a la siguiente cita, en Valladolid en 21 días.
No pudieron seguir dando la machada Nachi Sager y Lucas Campagnolo, que venían de tumbar a ‘Carburger’. Han perdido ante Arroyo y Jofre, que vienen mejorando a pasos agigantados y que vuelven a unos cuartos de final tras haber sido la sorpresa en Buenos Aires. Aunque, eso sí, se medirán a Galán y Chingotto, que están absolutamente imparables.
Tampoco lo tendrán fácil Paquito y Bergamini, que también han ganado. Su encuentro era ante Alonso y Bautista, un verdadero hueso en esta ronda. Sin embargo, lo han sacado adelante en tres sets. Jugarán en cuartos contra Coello y Tapia, que fueron sus verdugos en la final de Argentina. Los número uno no han dado opción a Esbrí y Diestro, una dupla siempre competitiva en este tipo de choques.
Revolución en el cuadro femenino
A comienzo de temporada, había muy pocas sorpresas en el lado femenino. Normalmente eran las ocho primeras parejas las que se metían en cuartos, las cuatro en semis y las dos en la final. Un guion claro que se repetía semana tras semana. Sin embargo, desde hace un par de torneos parece que esa tónica ha cambiado de forma radical y varias favoritas están cayendo mucho antes de lo previsto.
Goenaga y Caldera pusieron su nombre en los cuartos de final.
La principal novedad es la derrota de Ustero y Araujo. Son la cuarta dupla por puntos en el ranking y, aunque no venían con las mejores sensaciones en sus dos primeras pruebas, sí habían sido capaces de llegar hasta semifinales y cuartos. Sin embargo, en este Major no han podido pasar de octavos, porque unas inspiradísimas Guinart e Iglesias han acabado con su participación en Roma. Golpe durísimo para un proyecto que no termina de arrancar.
Tampoco están funcionado Salazar y Virseda, que tras un inicio espectacular están sufriendo una racha muy negativa. Vuelven a perder y esta vez ante Barrera y Caparrós. Lo mismo que Sainz y Llaguno, aunque ellas no han podido con Goenaga y Caldera, que se están convirtiendo en una de las parejas más en forma del mundo. Espectacular Carmen, juntos a una Bea que también está creciendo a pasos agigantados.
Las que no fallan son las tres primeras. Ari y Paula evitaron que Martina Calvo y Aranza Osoro volvieran a hacer historia, demostrando que están de vuelta a su mejor nivel. Bea y Claudia no sufrieron, pero lo de Gemma Triay y Delfi Brea fue de otro planeta. 6-0/6-0 para meterse en cuartos sin despeinarse. 46 minutos necesitaron para dar un paso más hacia una nueva final.
