Gauffová finále vyhrála po obratu 6:7, 6:2, 6:4 a získala druhý grandslamový titul v kariéře. Sabalenková se v utkání dopustila 70 nevynucených chyb a následně na tiskové konferenci uvedla, že jednadvacetiletá Američanka zvítězila „ne díky tomu, že hrála úžasně, ale proto, že ona sama udělala tolik chyb“.
Nyní v rozhovoru pro Eurosport světová jednička řekla, že svých tehdejších slov lituje. „Bylo to ode mě naprosto neprofesionální, přemohly mě emoce. Všichni děláme chyby. Jsem jen člověk a stále se v životě učím. Všichni máme tyhle dny, kdy ztrácíme kontrolu,“ řekla Sabalenková. „Rozdíl u mě je v tom, že svět sleduje, co dělám, takže mě pak kritizují více než ostatní lidi.“

Své přemožitelce Gauffové se později osobně omluvila. „Chtěla jsem se jí omluvit a dát jí najevo, že si vyhrát naprosto zasloužila a že ji respektuju. Nikdy jsem neměla v úmyslu ji napadnout. Na té tiskové konferenci jsem byla příliš emotivní a nezachovala jsem se moc chytře,“ řekla sebekriticky rodačka z Minsku, jež letos prohrála obě grandslamová finále. Na trávu si před Wimbledonem Sabalenková aktuálně zvyká na turnaji v Berlíně.
