There’s no doubt that the New York Giants were one of the standout teams in the recent NFL Draft. Not because they selected Abdul Carter – who is indeed a great talent and could quickly become one of the league’s top defenders – that pick was spot-on by the Big Apple team.
However, the Giants were also involved in the quarterback market, and for a long time, Shedeur Sanders was linked to the team. But New York was arguably the first team to shut the door on him. At the end of the first round, they moved up in the draft to select a quarterback – but it wasn’t Sanders. They surprised everyone by picking Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss with the 24th overall pick.
So, it’s safe to say that the Giants won’t be a favorite team for Shedeur Sanders, who will now look to prove they were completely wrong. For the time being, Sanders is fighting for a spot in Cleveland alongside three other quarterbacks: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and rookie Dillon Gabriel.
Jaxson Dart enters training camp as QB2 for the Giants
What’s clear is that Jaxson Dart is now a quarterback for the New York Giants, and the futures of Head Coach Brian Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen may depend on him.
After the Giants’ minicamp and OTAs, quarterback Jaxson Dart appears to have claimed the QB2 spot, behind only Russell Wilson and ahead of Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito.
“Jaxson Dart now appears to be the second-team quarterback,” said Jordan Raanan, a New York Giants insider.
“Sometimes, he holds onto the ball a little too long. There’s a lot of running, a lot of plays that, you know, could have been sacks. But on the other hand, you see some throws and you think, ‘wow, that was a really good pass.’ Or, ‘look at that elusiveness. Look how he can run.’ So, we’ve seen some good things and also some bad things from Jaxson Dart… It’s more or less what you’d expect from a rookie quarterback.”
It’s clear for now that Russell Wilson will be the starting quarterback for the Giants at the beginning of the season – especially since their first games will be against the Commanders, Cowboys, Chiefs, and Chargers. But there’s no doubt that at some point during the season – perhaps sooner rather than later – Brian Daboll will have to put Jaxson Dart on the field.
