Nový trenér Interu Rumun Cristian Chivu změnil sestavu, která před 17 dni dny v Mnichově utrpěla debakl od PSG, na čtyřech místech. Dokonce i většinou nepostradatelný francouzský útočník Marcus Thuram začal jen na lavičce. Evropský favorit inkasoval jako první.
Ve 25. minutě vytáhl devětatřicetiletý španělský obránce Sergio Ramos svou velkou zbraň, s níž šestnáct let zářil v barvách Realu Madrid. Po rohovém kopu přeskočil dva protihráče a podařenou hlavičkou rozjásal početné mexické publikum. O vyrovnání se ještě do přestávky postaral Lautaro Martínez, když po lobu z přímého kopu za obranu poslal míč do odkryté branky.
Argentinský mistr světa se trefil po přestávce znovu, ale z ofsajdu a mexický tým, na jehož lavičce debutoval španělský kouč Domènec Torrent, měl k vítězství blíž. Sergio Canales střelou z dálky orazítkoval tyč za zády brankáře Yanna Sommera.
Trenér Torrent prý hráčům zdůrazňoval, aby neměli komplexy ze slavného jména soupeře. „Řekl jsem jim, ať si to užijí. Dodrželi náš scénář, tvrdě pracovali a bod si zaslouží,“ citoval kouče web FIFA.
Sergio Ramos byl i po utkání středem pozornosti médií. „Věděli jsme, že to bude fyzicky hodně náročné a v prvním poločase jsme byli dost nervózní a často ztráceli míč. Pak už jsme ho přece jen víc podrželi. Jeden bod je lepší než žádný,“ řekl kapitán mexického týmu.
Záložník Interu Henrik Mchitarjan postrádal u svého týmu větší důraz před brankou. „Mohli jsme dát ještě další góly, ale byli jsme vpředu málo agresivní. Je to nová soutěž a všechny týmy jsou tady hodně motivované. Musíme udělat maximum pro to, abychom dávali víc gólů a vyhráli další zápasy,“ řekl arménský fotbalista.
Mamelodi Sundowns přiletěli na turnaj v podobné náladě jako milánský Inter. Před dvěma týdny prohráli finále africké Ligy národů, ale v Orlandu začali vítězně a vyhoupli se do čela skupiny F, v níž v prvním úterním zápase hrála Borussia Dortmund s Fluminense 0:0.
Utkání začalo s hodinovým zpožděním kvůli bouřce, která se přehnala nad Floridou. Hlavní postavou byl útočník Iqraam Rayners, který během prvního poločasu poslal míč do sítě hned třikrát. Dvakrát mu gól vzal videorozhodčí, který jednou odhalil hraní rukou a podruhé ofsajd. Po přihrávce brazilského tvůrce hry Ribeira už bylo všechno v pořádku, a to stačilo na tři body. Korejci odpovědět nedokázali, přestože po změně stran měli šanci.
V 18:00 začne ve Filadelfii zápas skupiny G Manchester City – Wydad Casablanca a od 21:00 se ve skupině H v Miami utkají saúdskoarabský al-Hilál s Realem Madrid.
