Zatímco floridský brankář Bobrovskij vyšvihl ve finále gólový průměr na 2,45 na zápas a úspěšnost zákroků 91,9 procenta, edmontonské jedničce Stuartu Skinnerovi to haprovalo. Dvakrát byl během série střídán, a nakonec měl nevalné statistiky – průměr 3,97 a úspěšnost jen 86,1 procenta.
„Jejich gólman chytal extrémně dobře. A my nebyli schopni naložit správně s našimi příležitostmi,“ tvrdil kouč Kris Knoblauch. „Soupeři hráli konzistentně po celou sérii, ale naše výkony byly nahoru a dolů. Ať už Bobrovskij dostal třeba pět gólů, tak příště hráli stejně a nic neměnili. Staří dobří Florida Panthers,“ uznal Skinner. „Tohle jsou tvrdé lekce, které člověka můžou posunout dál, ale když se vám to stane dvakrát v řadě, je to devastující.“
Tahle porážka bude bolet dlouho. Kromě Boucharda, který je chráněným volným hráčem, mají ale všechny klíčové postavy Oilers podepsáno i na další sezonu. A McDavid bude chtít pohár za každou cenu. „Pořád si myslím, že to dáme, našemu týmu věřím, i když si spousta lidí řekla, že když jsme to nevyhráli doposud, tak máme smůlu,“ tvrdila edmontonská hvězda.
Za rok už se třeba dočkáme chvilek, o kterých mluvil gólman Skinner v souvislosti s předchozími sériemi s Vegas a s Dallasem. „Když jsme se rozjeli, myslel jsem, že jsme neporazitelní…“ Pak se ovšem do hry vložila Florida.
