Newcastle United are coming off the back of a successful season after they ended their 70-year trophy drought against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
They will kick off the 2025-26 season with a visit to Aston Villa before hosting the champions at St. James’ Park.
The new season will also see Eddie Howe’s side meet Sunderland in the top flight once again after their rivals won promotion via the playoffs in May. The first north east derby of the campaign will come at the Stadium of Light on December 13. The return fixture is scheduled for March 21.

They will conclude the season with a trip to London to face Fulham.
Newcastle’s return to the highest level of European competition will be a new focus in the 2025-26 season. The last time they competed in the Champions League, 2023-24 they did so for the first time in a decade and were knocked out in the group stage.

Analysis
By George Caulkin
It’s all about Sunderland. It has to be, however much some Newcastle fans might persuade themselves that they have outgrown the petty, internecine squabbling of the Tyne-Wear derby as they seek to establish themselves as a significant force in English football.
There will be better and more glamorous matches next season as Newcastle, recently-crowned as Carabao Cup winners, return to the Champions League, but nothing will match Sunderland home and away for thunderous noise, adrenaline and meaning.
Those games will take place at the Stadium of Light on December 13 and at St James’ Park on March 21, their first league meetings since 2016 when a 1-1 draw on Tyneside brought an end to a harrowing sequence of six consecutive Sunderland wins.
Not that it did Newcastle much good; they were relegated that season, one place and two points behind their greatest rivals.
In January last year, there was a measure of score-settling when Newcastle were 3-0 victors on Wearside in the FA Cup, but Sunderland are still owed one. Something to note: that away derby will come straight after a Champions League tie, which will surely stretch Eddie Howe’s squad.
Still, it’s a nice problem to have.
Newcastle’s start is brutal; an early-kick off at Aston Villa, followed by a home game against Liverpool, the champions, then away to newly-promoted Leeds. December also looks like a tester, with games around Christmas against Chelsea and Manchester United on the 27th.

The other way of looking at it: Howe’s players beat all of those teams, Leeds apart, last season. This is the level they are operating at.
