Enzo Maresca says he will reach out to Mykhailo Mudryk to check on his state of mind after the winger was formally charged by the Football Association (FA) with a doping violation.
Mudryk has not featured for Chelsea since being provisionally suspended in December following an “adverse finding in a routine urine test”, and on Wednesday an FA spokesperson confirmed in a statement that the Ukraine international is now the subject of disciplinary proceedings that could see him banned from football for a maximum of four years.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of Chelsea’s second FIFA Club World Cup group game against Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday, Maresca revealed that he has not spoken to Mudryk since the 24-year-old unexpectedly joined his teammates for the celebrations that followed last month’s UEFA Conference League final in Wroclaw.
Asked if he is worried about how Mudryk is dealing with the news, Maresca said: “The last time I spoke with Misha was in Poland and he was quite good. I didn’t see him worried or at least I didn’t see him not good. He was good, he was okay.
“Since that day I didn’t speak with him, so I don’t know how he is now. But for sure in the next days, in the weeks, we are going to have contact with him.”
Chelsea have not commented on Mudryk’s situation, but the decision earlier this month to give Cole Palmer the Ukraine international’s old No 10 shirt was widely interpreted as a sign that the club are planning for life without him on the pitch.
Maresca has also been candid about the need for the club to sign a new left winger this summer in light of Jadon Sancho’s return to Manchester United at the conclusion of his season-long loan, but Chelsea’s head coach insisted that strengthening his squad options on the left wing would have been a priority in this transfer window regardless of Mudryk’s availability.
“We had already one entire season almost without Misha last season,” Maresca added. “We tried to find different solutions with some of the academy players like Tyrique (George). But we’re going to decide to go for a winger, not because of Misha.
“Even here you see we have (Noni) Madueke and (Pedro) Neto as proper wingers, and then we try to adapt. Tyrique the other day was inside for some minutes and we tried different players (on the left wing) during the season, like Christo (Nkunku) or Kiernan (Dewsbury-Hall), but for sure it’s not something that I think about.”
