O Los Angeles Lakers foi vendido por 10 bilhões de dólares e se tornou a franquia mais cara da história dos esportes americanos. Mark Walter, o novo dono, desembolsou o valor astronômico para a família Buss, que tinha o controle do time de LA desde 1979. Ele tem posse também do Los Angeles Dodgers (beisebol) e é sócio do Los Angeles Sparks, da WNBA, e do Chelsea, da Inglaterra.
Sendo assim, os Lakers assumem o topo histórico e ultrapassam o Boston Celtics, vendido recentemente por US$ 6,1 bilhões. O top-5 ainda tem dois times da NFL: o Washington Commanders (US$ 6,05 bilhões, em 2023) e o Denver Broncos (US$ 4,65 bilhões, no ano de 2022), além do Phoenix Suns, da NBA (US$ 4 bilhões, em 2022).
