Just like Batman has always needed Robin, Caitlin Clark had been looking for her sidekick in the WNBA since she was drafted by the Indiana Fever last season with the number one pick. Now, she just found it in Sophie Cunningham – and that has catapult her to become the second-biggest star in the league.
Cunningham, a six-year WNBA veteran previously with the Phoenix Mercury, said in February when she arrived in Indiana: “I’m feisty, I’m fierce, I’m sassy. I stick up for my teammates, I stick up for myself, and I think that’s a good thing.” Those words proved true when it came to having Caitlin Clark’s back.
Sophie Cunningham and the wild move that put her in the spotlight while showing who she really is
Clark constantly gets fouled in the league, and those contacts usually come with a bit more physicality than normal due to her superstar status. But the Fever star hadn’t been backed or protected by a teammate – until Cunningham arrived. After Connecticut Sun guard Jacy Sheldon poked Clark in the eye, Cunningham gave Sheldon a bit of her own medicine.
Cunningham’s popularity sky rockets
The demand for Cunningham’s No. 8 jersey has taken the Fever by surprise since she became Clark’s sidekick. Following the incident, sizes from medium to 2XL sold out almost immediately after being released online and in team stores, while the smallest sizes quickly reached “low stock.”
Sophie has also become a huge star on social media. In the first 24 hours after the incident, she gained over 500,000 followers on TikTok.
Speaking about how other WNBA players could benefit from Clark’s popularity, longtime sportswriter Jason Whitlock said: “Popularity was and still is available to any WNBA player who backs Caitlin Clark. Angel Reese would be three times more popular if she chose a friendly rivalry with Clark rather than an adversarial one.”

In the first inning, center fielder Oneil Cruz looked as if the losing had worn him down. Or he was frustrated at making another error at his position. On a Sam Haggerty single to center, Cruz ran over to field the ball but it went under his glove. Errors happen but rather than chase after the ball, Cruz stood and watched the ball roll away, presumably mad at himself for his mistake.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdam Frazier backed up the play, yet if Cruz had immediately run after the ball, he probably would have gotten to the ball first. It was a bad look for the young star, who appeared to be giving up on the play.As a result of Cruz's lackadaisical approach, Josh […]
