In a decisive response to immigration enforcement sweeping Los Angeles, the Dodgers have committed a substantial donation of $1 million to support immigrant families affected by recent ICE raids.
The baseball club announced the contribution on Friday, signalling a shift from observation to action after mounting pressure from fans, lawmakers, and community advocates.
Dodgers President and CEO Stan Kasten framed the gift as a reflection of the team’s responsibility to the region. In a statement, he said:
“What’s happening in Los Angeles has reverberated among thousands upon thousands of people, and we have heard the calls for us to take a leading role on behalf of those affected.”
“We believe that by committing resources and taking action, we will continue to support and uplift the communities of Greater Los Angeles.”
The team clarified that this funding will be routed through partnerships with the City of Los Angeles, community organizations, and labor groups, with further initiatives to be announced over the coming days.
Notably, they also denied ICE access to Dodger Stadium parking facilities, adding a symbolic barrier to enforcement efforts.
Despite not directly calling out the immigration crackdown, the Dodgers emphasized that the aid is intended for families of immigrants impacted by recent events in the region. Nevertheless, local leaders welcomed the gesture.
“These last weeks have sent shockwaves of fear rippling through every neighborhood and have had a direct impact on our economy,” Mayor Karen Bass remarked.
“My message to all Angelenos is clear: We will stick together during this time and we will not turn our backs on one another-that’s what makes this the greatest city in the world.”
Broader meaning of the donation
This initiative follows two weeks of ICE enforcement actions across Southern California that sparked widespread anxiety, especially within Latino communities.
The Dodgers‘ announcement comes at a time when public sentiment, including protests and petitions, has called for the team to explicitly oppose the raids.
Unlike some local sports franchises that issued statements of support, the Dodgers have gone further by making a tangible financial commitment.
They hope this contribution will inspire other organizations to leverage their resources for similar causes.
Manager Dave Roberts expressed optimism about the decision, stating:
“I’m sure the money is going to be allocated in the right way. I’m happy to hear that the Dodgers have done that, and it’s certainly the right thing to do.”
Additionally, several Dodger players and past personnel have openly criticized the ICE operations.
Kiké Hernández denounced the raids on social media, and longtime Spanish-language broadcaster Jaime Jarrín also expressed concern, highlighting the emotional toll within the fanbase.
