Yankees pull Clarke Schmidt after 7 no-hit innings, hear boos

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees were flirting with history Saturday afternoon as starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt had a no-hitter going through seven innings against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.

Then manager Aaron Boone pulled Schmidt, who had matched his career-high with 103 pitches, and JT Brubaker gave up a hit to the first batter he faced to lose the combined bid.

The Yankee Stadium crowd booed loudly as Gary Sanchez cruised into first base with a single into shallow center field.

It would have been the Yankees’ 14th no-hitter of all time and their first since Domingo Germán threw a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics on June 28, 2023. Corey Kluber threw a no-hitter vs. the Texas Rangers on the road on May 19, 2021, which was the first Yankees no-hitter since David Cone pitched a perfect game on July 18, 1999. The Yankees have never pitched a combined no-hitter.

Schmidt had allowed only two first-inning walks and a fourth-inning hit-by-pitch. The Yankees allowed just one hit in a 9-0 victory.

Schmidt finished the seventh inning by forcing Colton Cowser to pop out weakly to left field, and he walked off the mound to an ovation from the sold-out Yankee Stadium crowd of 46,141. He also had five strikeouts.

Schmidt then walked through the Yankees’ dugout, accepted high-fives from his teammates and went into the clubhouse. It seemed unlikely at the time that he would continue into the eighth inning. The most pitches he’d thrown in a game this season had been 99 on May 28.

Schmidt got into trouble in the first inning after walking Jordan Westburg and Gunnar Henderson, but he escaped with a strikeout and a groundout.

Then Schmidt cruised until hitting Ryan O’Hearn with a 1-2 curveball in the fourth inning. Another strikeout and a flyout got Schmidt out of that frame.

Schmidt was coming off what had been his best start of the year up until this point, a 7 2/3-inning, scoreless performance against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday at home.
