Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter has shown once again that his loyalty to Coach Deion Sanders runs deeper than football.
After wrapping up minicamp with the Jaguars, Hunter made a personal trip to visit his former college coach at Sanders‘ sprawling 5,000-acre Texas ranch, a gesture that speaks volumes about the bond the two have built over the years.
Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, shares a father-son-like connection with Sanders.
He followed Sanders from Jackson State to Colorado and, under his leadership, went on to capture the Heisman Trophy, college football’s most prestigious award.
Deion was right there beside him that night to celebrate, while Hunter‘s biological father was not present. That moment symbolized just how important Coach Prime has been in the young star’s life.
Their shared history isn’t just defined by football accolades or sideline speeches. It’s built on real moments, like the ones at Sanders‘ Texas ranch. During a Colorado bye week last season, Hunter spent time there fishing with his mentor.
And once again, he returned this week to enjoy a peaceful day on the water with the man who helped shape his football journey and personal growth.
Spent time together
A video surfaced online showing the pair fishing, smiling and relaxing. It was especially meaningful given that Deion couldn’t attend Hunter‘s wedding to Leanna Lenee. However, Shedeur Sanders did drop by, albeit in an outfit many deemed far too casual for the occasion.
Still, Hunter made it a point to be present for Coach Prime when it mattered, especially now. The 57-year-old Sanders has been public about his ongoing health challenges, including recent revelations about alarming weight loss and a long battle with blood clots. His health issues have led to multiple surgeries and, most notably, the amputation of two toes on his left foot.
For the 22-year-old Hunter, who now faces the pressure of living up to lofty expectations as one of the most highly touted rookies in recent memory, it would’ve been easy to get swept up in the new lifestyle and training demands.
But instead, he chose to spend his free time with the man who guided him through the challenges of college life, the spotlight, and now into the pros.
It’s a reminder that some bonds in sports are about more than games won or trophies earned-they’re about the human connections that shape character and direction. Hunter and Sanders‘ relationship reflects that rare kind of mentorship that extends well beyond the playbook.
