Ventos fortes derrubaram o portão principal de chegada à praia de Itaúna, onde acontecem as disputas da etapa de Saquarema da WSL, nesta terça-feira. No mesmo momento, acontecia um meet and greet com Gabriel Medina junto a Vivo. O evento, que antes aconteceria no stand a céu aberto, foi transferido para a área VIP devido às condições climáticas. Porém, o mau tempo se agravou e, devido o risco da estrutura desabar, o local foi evacuado.
Fora da elite do surfe mundial neste momento, mas sempre uma das grandes estrelas da modalidade, Gabriel Medina fez um evento para encontrar com fãs, e posou para fotos, distribuiu autógrafos e conversou brevemente com os admiradores.
O evento coincidiu com um dia de “day off” na Praia de Itaúna — sem competições programadas pela organização da WSL — e ocorreu num cenário menos paradisíaco do que o habitual: céu nublado, temperatura amena e um ambiente mais ameno, distante do clima típico de praia com sol radiante.

No começo de janeiro, o surfista lesionou o tendão do músculo peitoral maior do ombro esquerdo ao tentar uma manobra aérea durante um treino em Maresias e precisou passar por cirurgia. As previsões médicas indicavam entre quatro a seis meses até o retorno aos treinos e de seis a oito meses até o retorno às competições. Desde então, Medina retomou os treinos leves, inicialmente em uma piscina de ondas em São Paulo.
No domingo, 10 surfistas brasileiros caíram na água no primeiro dia de baterias em Saquarema. No feminino, Tati Weston-Webb, que voltou a competir após uma pausa pela saúde mental, avançou direto para as quartas. Já Luana Silva foi eliminada na primeira bateria, mas venceu a atual campeã mundial, Caitlin Simmers, na repescagem, e também segue viva na disputa.
No masculino, Italo Ferreira, Miguel Pupo e Filipinho Toledo venceram as baterias e garantiram a vaga nas oitavas. Yago Dora, João Chianca e o convidado Gabriel Klaussner tentarão avançar através da repescagem.
