Since the New York Giants selected Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the organization has repeatedly confirmed that veteran quarterback, Russell Wilson, will remain the Week 1 starter. But one expert thinks it could be a mistake.
Despite the excitement that comes with a highly touted rookie quarterback, the Giants‘ management has made it clear that Dart will not see much playing time in his first season as he learns the ropes.

Most analysts have viewed the 22-year-old as a prospect who will require time to adjust to the demands of the NFL, a sentiment echoed by the likes of the Giants‘ general manager, Joe Schoen, and their head coach, Brian Daboll.
But not everyone agrees with New York’s cautious approach as the former NFL offensive lineman and current football analyst, Mark Schlereth, has taken a firm stance in favor of starting Dart right away.
“The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart,” Schlereth stated bluntly to FS1’s Breakfast Ball, suggesting they should accept the inevitable growing pains that come with starting a rookie quarterback and not be overly concerned about missing the playoffs immediately.
Schlereth further pointed to the Giants‘ strong defense as an advantage for Dart, adding that it provides a solid foundation for a young quarterback to develop his game but despite the call for immediate action, Dart spent minicamps primarily working with the second-team offense.
His initial reps were with the third team, underscoring the team’s commitment to a gradual development plan in the wake of Jaxson‘s selection as he finds himself behind Wilson and Jameis Winston in the pecking order.
Daboll quickly made it known that Wilson’s experience would be crucial early on after they brought onboard the Super Bowl-winning veteran, on a one-year contract at the MetLife Stadium.
Winston, on a two-year deal, was also brought in but both are viewed as short-term solutions with the Giants perceiving Dart as the long-term future, but not immediately out of the blocks.
Dart’s weakness could echo Daniel Jones struggles
While Dart has impressed with flashes of brilliance, such as a deep touchdown throw during minicamp, analysts have pointed to some worrying tendencies that could hamper his immediate effectiveness.
For example, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan highlighted that although Daboll praised Dart’s mental processing and learning ability, the rookie sometimes holds onto the ball too long before throwing.
This particular issue strikes a chord with Giants fans who endured similar frustrations watching their former quarterback, Daniel Jones, who had a tendency to delay passing resulted in missed opportunities and squandered plays.
Raanan noted that Dart’s hesitation in the pocket is a “rookie flaw,” but one that could prove costly, especially considering the Giants’ offensive line currently lacks the depth to protect a quarterback vulnerable to pressure.
