Než se však polský brankář stal fotbalovým velikánem, vedla k tomu trnitá cesta. Vyrůstal v hornickém prostředí.
Dalo by se až říct, že s krumpáčem se snad rovnou narodil.
Do fotbalového světa nevlétl hned. Než se vydal na profesionální dráhu, sám musel fárat. Už v mládí nastoupil na hornickou odbornou školu a dvakrát týdně sjížděl do dolu do hloubky 400 metrů.
„Byla to pro mě rutina,“ vzpomínal v rozhovoru pro klubový magazín Hala Madrid. „Viděl jsem chlapy, kteří tam dřeli den co den. Cítil jsem se jako jeden z nich, jako bojovník.“
Pod zemí si prošel různými rolemi. „Byl jsem praktikant. Dělal jsem betonové ploty, nosil uhlí do kotelny,“ popisoval. Tvrdá práce, která ho ale posílila. „Hornictví mě naučilo pokoře a vybudovalo mi charakter. Člověk musí mít oči i vzadu,“ dodal.
Zlom nastal v osmnácti letech. Kvůli nové legislativě už doly nesměly zaměstnávat aktivní fotbalisty, a tak se z Dudka stal profesionální hráč třetiligové Concordie Knurów. Rychle na sebe upozornil – s čistým štítem držel rekordních 416 minut. A zanedlouho zamířil do nejvyšší polské soutěže.
Hvězdná kariéra naplno odstartovala po přestupu do nizozemského Feyenoordu. Vyhrál titul a dvakrát byl zvolen nejlepším brankářem ligy. V Liverpoolu pak potvrdil status hvězdy. Vedle domácích trofejí si zapsal i ten největší úspěch – triumf v Lize mistrů v roce 2005. V památném finále v Istanbulu vychytal penaltový rozstřel proti AC Milán. Na hřišti s ním tehdy byli i Češi Vladimír Šmicer a Milan Baroš.
Závěr kariéry strávil v Realu Madrid, kde kryl záda Ikeru Casillasovi. I přesto s klubem oslavil španělský titul i vítězství v domácím poháru.
Po konci kariéry se stal fotbalovým expertem, oblíbil si golf a aktivně se věnuje i motorsportu. Výjimečnost Jerzyho Dudka podtrhuje i skutečnost, že za svůj přínos obdržel ocenění od papeže Jana Pavla II.
Nyní se na něj v sobotu odpoledne mohou těšit i fanoušci v Česku, když oslaví sto let fotbalu v Dolních Chabrech vedle dalších legend Liverpoolu.
