Thanks to Bill Belichick’s keen eye for talent, Tom Brady made his NFL debut in Week 3 of the 2000 season against the Detroit Lions. Before that, Brady was selected with the 199th overall pick in the NFL Draft out of the University of Michigan, a late-round selection that would ultimately change the course of New England Patriots history.
Brady’s Journey from College Prospect to NFL Star
Bill Belichick talked with Alex Rodriguez and Jason Kelly in the podcast “The Deal,” where he shared some moments of his coaching life and some decisions he took during his coaching career. Likewise, he mentioned that he was impressed with the discipline and ethic work Brady had. “Two guys in front of him weren’t all that good, so that’s where he was. But he became great. And day after day after day after day, he just kept improving.”
“Finally, in the Orange Bowl against Alabama, Tom’s best game, final game. And you could really see him play. Talent was okay, but he was very smart. He loved football, and he worked extremely hard“. He added in the podcast.
Belichick also talked about the moment when Brady was the second quarterback of the Michigan team behind Brian Griese. “Tom Brady played as backup quarterback to Griese, and Tom was a senior at the University of Michigan,” he added. “Tom was a senior, and they had Thomas Drew Henson, who was a big recruit as a freshman, playing time as a freshman.”

Throughout 19 seasons, the partnership between Bill Belichick and Tom Brady established the New England Patriots as one of the most dominant dynasties in NFL history. Together, they appeared in nine Super Bowls and secured six championships, a record that hasn’t been unmatched until now.
The duo also guided the Patriots to 17 division titles, including 11 consecutive titles from 2009 to 2019, along with 13 AFC Championship appearances. The relationship broke when Brady parted ways in 2020 and went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won Super Bowl LV.
Today, Brady serves as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, while Belichick has taken on the role of head coach at the University of North Carolina, which is in the NCAA Division I.
