Ještě před kvalifikací formule 1 dostali diváci na Red Bull Ringu pořádně zajímavý předkrm v podobě sprintu nižší třídy. Hned po startu se Staněk dokázal vyšvihnout ze čtvrtého místa na druhé, následně však klesl za pozdějšího vítěze, Španěla Pepe Martího.
Sprint již ve druhém kole přerušila děsivá nehoda čtyř závodníků. Meguetounif se ostře přiřítil do prudké zatáčky, po kontaktu se soupeři už nedokázal svůj monopost vůbec kontrolovat a přes vůz Jaka Craworda udělal dvě otočky, načež skončil na střeše.
Od zdravotní újmy ho zachránil systém halo, v překladu svatozář, která při podobných incidentech chrání jezdcům oblast hlavy.
Komisaři ihned mávali červenými vlajkami a závod na více než půl hodiny přerušili. Po restartu si Staněk pohlídal třetí pozici, kterou se ve zbytku z 28 kol ještě snažil vylepšit. V závěru mohutně útočil na druhou příčku Paraguayce Joshuy Dürksena, ale marně.
Naopak ještě musel odrážet atak Belgičana Cordeela. Ten se ale při svém pokusu o předjetí v posledním kole roztočil a zůstal stát u krajnice, posléze do něj napálila další trojice pilotů. Do finiše sprintu se tak dostalo jen 13 z 20 závodníků.
