Is Caitlin Clark about to leave the WNBA to start a new league built around her name? That’s the question rippling across the media and fan circles after jaw-dropping claims from journalist Christine Brennan, author of On Her Game, the book chronicling Clark’s meteoric rise.
Since her college days, Clark has been a phenomenon. With a blend of electric talent and next-level charisma, the former Iowa Hawkeye fills arenas with ease, and her televised appearances consistently smash ratings records.
Her arrival in the WNBA has supercharged the league’s visibility and growth, with analysts projecting it could generate up to $1 billion in revenue in the coming years.
Yet Clark earns just $78,000 annually. That salary, juxtaposed with her market value, presents a tantalizing opportunity for one of her corporate sponsors to do something radical: create a league just for her.
Could the Caitlin Clark Basketball League become reality?
In a recent interview with ESPN LA, Brennan pointed out that the Indiana Fever guard already has multimillion-dollar endorsement deals with global brands like Wilson, Gatorade, and State Farm. Her Nike contract alone is reportedly worth $33 million, underscoring the so called “Clark Effect.”
“If Nike said, ‘We’re going to make the Nike Clark League,’ they could do it,” Brennan said about a league sponsored by the $30 billion sportswear giant.
She acknowledged the logistical hurdles-building arenas, setting up operations-but believes the rewards would be staggering. “It would take a few years to get the arenas and logistics in place, but the TV contract? It’s Caitlin. The viewership is all about Caitlin Clark. Not Angel and Caitlin-just Caitlin.”
Angel Reese left off the court
Brennan also dismissed the idea that Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese would need to be involved in a future league centered around Clark.
“I think Angel is a great rebounder and excellent at what she does,” Brennan said, “but she doesn’t move the needle when it comes to ratings. Caitlin does.”
With the WNBA still grappling with leadership issues and pay disparities, Brennan speculated it’s only a matter of time before a company like Nike makes a move. “It’s doable-especially given the leadership vacuum the WNBA continues to show.”
So, is the world ready for the Caitlin Clark Basketball League? If the momentum and money are any indicators, it might already be in the works.
