Den Versuch war es wert. Hertha BSC und die beauftragte Agentur „Sportheads“ von Marc Mayer-Vorfelder ist bei der Suche nach einem neuen Manager auf Ralf Rangnick (66) gekommen. Nach Info von SPORT BILD trafen sich die Berliner mindestens einmal mit dem Trainer der österreichischen Nationalmannschaft, der solche Gesprächsanfragen in der Regel immer wahrnimmt.
Generell reizen ihn Projekte, bei denen er Gestaltungsfreiraum und viel Entwicklungspotenzial hat. Dennoch sagte er ab – vor allem, weil er sein Team zur WM 2026 bringen will. Es war nicht die erste Absage von Rangnick an Hertha.
2019 klingelte Rangnicks Telefon. Jürgen Klinsmann (60) war damals von Investor Lars Windhorst (48) in den Aufsichtsrat von Hertha berufen worden und fahndete nach einem Nachfolger des erfolglosen Trainers Ante Covic (49). Rangnick sagte ab – und lange hielten sich Gerüchte, dass er nicht mit dem damaligen Manager Michael Preetz (57) zusammenarbeiten wollte. Das dementierte Rangnicks Management aber später. Rangnick war zu der Zeit noch bei RB Leipzig, hätte aber die Freigabe der Sachsen bekommen.

In den Gesprächen konnte er sich den Posten bei Hertha aussuchen. Sogar eine Doppelrolle als Sportdirektor und Trainer wäre beim damals abstiegsbedrohten Hauptstadtklub möglich gewesen. Denn Coach Bruno Labbadia (59) musste damals gemeinsam mit Preetz gehen.
Jetzt sollte Rangnick die vakante Stelle als Sport-Geschäftsführer besetzen – und sagte einmal mehr der Hertha ab.
