Ao longo do primeiro tempo, a equipe francesa não deu nenhuma chance para os donos da casa e somente no toque de bola colocava o rival na roda. Em determinado momento, porém, o camisa 10 perdeu a paciência e por muito pouco não desferiu um soco na direção do meio-campista Vitinha.
Na intermediária, o camisa 17 recebeu o passe e logo viu a aproximação do argentino. Ao girar com a bola, o português foi surpreendido por uma forte marcação do meia, conseguiu se desvencilhar dela e, no movimento, quase é agredido.
No X (antigo Twitter), torcedores, sobretudo do Paris Saint-Germain, estavam revoltados e decepcionados com a atitude de Messi. “Ele realmente odeia o Vitinha”, escreveu um adepto do clube francês.

Na avaliação de outros, Messi não soube digerir o resultado e, principalmente, a humilhação sofrida pelo Inter Miami, que escapou de uma goleada ainda maior. Depois de virar o primeiro tempo com 4 a 0, a equipe comandada por Luis Enrique claramente diminuiu o ritmo perante a fatura já liquidada e a classificação assegurada para as quartas de final do Mundial de Clubes.
