The end of June was not kind: nine out of ten recent losses, anemic offense and defensive errors for the New York Mets. After losing consecutively to lowly teams, morale was affected.
Although the Mets are still in the wild card zone, the slump was on and the results were loud: just three runs in two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After the 9-2 loss, Francisco Lindor called a meeting “just between players”, a space for trust and reflection:

Pete Alonso, Juan Soto and Lindor were among the “six or seven” who stood up and shared opinions on offense, defense and base running. Brandon Nimmo confirmed that there were no speeches or pep talks: “it was more of a community forum”.
The message from the New York Mets
- Francisco Lindor: the moderator: Lindor stressed that while it is not a magic solution, talking opens up opportunities to recognize that “we’re going through this together”. In seeking to bring the team together, he looks to revitalize the collective spirit.
- Pete Alonso and Juan Soto: voice and example: Although their exact statements were not revealed, both joined the active dialogue. Soto, with a 1.214 OPS in June, asked his teammates to “keep believing”. Alonso acknowledged the lack of cleanliness in all aspects of the game and the need to improve execution.
- Brandon Nimmo: Although he did not speak at the meeting, Nimmo backed Walton’s group approach: “nobody is pointing fingers at someone, we’re all going through this together”.
The spark of the New York Mets in the midst of defeat
Despite the loss, there were flashes. Juan Soto hit two home runs the night before, setting a record of 27 multi-HR games under the age of 27.
Additionally, Lindor, Nimmo and Soto hit back-to-back home runs on June 21, proving the power of their top lineup. These moments show that, although the slump is wide, there is talent at the top of the lineup that can be the basis for a comeback.
New York Mets’ new strategy for the 2025 MLB season
- At this stage of the season, the Mets decided to respond to the crisis not with tactics but with honesty and leadership. Lindor, Alonso, Soto and Nimmo took a proactive role and showed that the team can rise from within. If these veterans hold the message and management accompanies with reinforcements, the recovery could be underway for the next matchups.
- The team also faces the challenge of renewing its bottom lineup. After highlighting the weakness at the bottom of the order, changes could come before the trade deadline
