The Chicago Sky‘s narrow 81-79 loss to the Washington Mystics on July 8 added another chapter to a frustrating stretch for the team, and a moment of controversy for Angel Reese after she took her anger out on a clipboard.
The Tuesday night defeat saw tensions running high late in the fourth quarter as the Sky tried to chase their way back into the contest at the EagleBank Arena, before eventually coming up just short.
Despite delivering a dominant 22-point, 15-rebound performance, Reese found herself unable to make the key difference and her frustrations boiled over as she was seen slapping a clipboard out of the hands of an assistant coach as she returned to the bench.

Finding herself in the spotlight for more than just her on-court impact, the outburst caught immediate attention on social media and during postgame coverage, fueling speculation about the emotions of the Sky and its rising star.
“Those **** were pissing me off,” Reese wrote on X.com, formerly Twitter, addressing the incident. “Shoutout to Ann [Crosby].
“Because she know it was the heat of the moment and she didn’t let me apologize because she knew! Not happening again tho.”
Reese emphasized that there was no disrespect intended toward Crosby, and clarified that the assistant coach herself understood it as a moment of heat during a tightly contested game, showing good team unity.
Reese snubbed by Sky post-game honor
Tuesday’s game was particularly meaningful for Reese, who was making a return to the DMV area in front of a crowd that showed clear support for the hometown favorite, and throughout the game, her energy and presence were unmistakable.
It was perhaps why she was so frustrated as she couldn’t quite secure the win, despite recording her sixth consecutive double-double, a WNBA league record. She also went 12-of-15 from the free-throw line and committed just three turnovers.
But the defeat wasn’t the only sting as after the game, the Sky named Elizabeth Williams, who contributed a season-high 20 points and seven rebounds, as the team’s player of the game.
“our X factor. SEASON-HIGH FROM EWILL,” the team wrote in their postgame announcement, praising the woman who has stepped up in the absence of Kamilla Cardoso.
While Williams’ effort was commendable, fans questioned the omission of Reese, whose historic performance and impact on both ends of the floor arguably made a stronger case for the recognition.
Now at 8-13 on the season and in the midst of a two-game skid, the Sky will have little time to regroup. They return to action Wednesday night at home against the Dallas Wings, a struggling team themselves at 6-14.
The matchup also marks the Chicago debut of Dallas rookie Paige Bueckers, adding another layer of intrigue to what could be a momentum-shifting game for the Sky as they try to chase down the WNBA Playoffs.
