Es soll eine Handball-Revolution werden.
Dierk Schmäschke (67) redet nach der Nominierung von Gerd Butzeck zur Wahl des IHF-Präsidenten als Erster über einen Rückzug von Amtsinhaber Hassan Moustafa (80). Schmäschke ist Präsident des Handball-Top-Klubs SG Flensburg-Handewitt, war dort und auch beim HSV Hamburg sehr erfolgreich als Geschäftsführer tätig. Als Vize-Präsident des Forum Club Handball (FCH), der Vereinigung der europäischen Top-Klubs, ist er national wie international einer der einflussreichsten Funktionäre. Hier äußert sich Schmäschke zur Nominierung von Butzeck (SPORT BILD berichtete) und sagt deutlich, was sich nach der 25-jährigen Regentschaft des Ägypters Moustafa ändern muss.
SPORT BILD: Herr Schmäschke, der Deutsche Handballbund hat am Wochenende völlig überraschend Gerd Butzeck zum offiziellen Kandidaten für die Wahl zum Präsidenten des Weltverbands IHF nominiert. Erleben wir nach der Wahl am 21. Dezember den ersten deutschen Welthandball-Boss?
Dierk Schmäschke: Unabhängig von Nationalität ist es wichtig, nach 25 Jahren Amtszeit von IHF-Präsident Hassan Moustafa endlich einmal einen Gegenkandidaten zu haben. Allein schon, um im internationalen Handball mal etwas zu verändern. Daher finde ich es sehr gut und richtig, dass der DHB als größter Handballverband der Welt, erstmals einen Kandidaten ins Rennen zu schicken.

Butzeck ist seit 19 Jahren Geschäftsführer des Forum Club Handball, der Vereinigung der europäischen Top-Klubs. Der Name Butzeck ist vor allem Handball-Insidern in Europa ein Begriff. Weltweit ist er dagegen eher unbekannt. Was halten Sie selbst von ihm ?
Man darf das nicht unterschätzen. Butzeck ist in der internationalen Handballwelt und insbesondere in Europa eine große Nummer und über Jahrzehnte in unterschiedlichen Positionen aktiv gewesen. Er ist ja nicht umsonst aufgrund seiner Fähigkeiten seit 2006 Geschäftsführer des Forum Club Handball. Als Vize-Präsident des HC weiß ich, dass wir die Kontakte über Europa hinaus ausgebaut haben – nach Asien, Australien, in die USA. Das war ein wesentliches Verdienst von Gerd Butzeck. Er ist international bekannt.
Amtsinhaber Hassan Moustafa regiert seit 2000 ununterbrochen. Bei den vergangenen drei Wahlen hatte der Ägypter keine Gegenkandidaten und wurde beinahe einstimmig gewählt. Warum soll er jetzt nicht mehr der Richtige sein?
Für Hassan Moustafa ist es vorrangig, auch an seine eigene Gesundheit zu denken. Er ist immerhin schon 80, und seine jüngsten öffentlichen Auftritte bei der WM im Januar gaben Außenstehende schon Anlass zur Sorge. So ein Amt erfordert aber unheimlich viel Energie sowie geistige und körperliche Fitness. Er hat sicherlich seine Verdienste um den Welthandball. Die IHF hat sehr erfolgreich Weltmeisterschaften ausgerichtet, allerdings fast ausschließlich in Europa. Aber wir müssen auch über die Grenzen auf andere Kontinente schauen, um auch im Hinblick auf den Verbleib im olympischen Programm Handball globaler auszurichten. Diesen operativen Kraftakt traue ich Gerd Butzeck zu.
Sie sind mutig. In 25 Jahren Amtszeit hat sich noch niemand öffentlich für die Abwahl Moustafas ausgesprochen …
Ich bin nicht der Einzige, der so denkt, aber der Einzige, der es offen anspricht. Es geht mir gar nicht darum, ihn persönlich abzuwählen. Aber aus meiner Sicht ist der Zeitpunkt gekommen, frischen Wind in den Welthandball zu bringen. Auch aufgrund seines fortgeschrittenen Alters sollte er sich fragen, ob es nicht sinnvoll ist, die Tür für Neues und für Jüngere zu öffnen.
[–>Untreue, Bestechlichkeit, Betrug – gegen Moustafa wurden in zweieinhalb Jahren allerhand Verdächtigungen geäußert, die bislang ohne Konsequenzen blieben. Könnte diese dunkle Vergangenheit im Dezember zum Vorteil für Butzeck werden?
Diese Vorwürfe begleiten Moustafa ja schon seit langer Zeit und sind bei einigen sicherlich auch im Hinterkopf. Wichtiger, als in seiner Vergangenheit zu wühlen, scheint mir aktuell aber eines: die Bereitschaft in allen IHF-Gremien, Türen für neue Wege zu öffnen – ohne dass dann künftig solche Anschuldigungen im Raum stehen.
Was müsste sich unter einem IHF-Präsidenten Butzeck ändern?
Er muss den Handball, der in Europa extrem stark ist, mit einer guten operativen Ebene auch in andere Kontinente tragen. In den kommenden Monaten muss er seine Kontakte nutzen, um den neuen Weg vorzubereiten, Handball weltweit zu stärken.
