The Colorado Buffaloes are set to send two of their biggest stars – Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter – to the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay on April 24. But ahead of that milestone, the university has ignited major controversy with an unexpected announcement.
During the Buffaloes‘ spring game on April 19, Colorado will retire the jerseys of both Sanders and Hunter – a move that’s left many fans outraged, particularly over Sanders’ inclusion.
While Travis Hunter, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is widely regarded as a generational talent deserving of the honor, the decision to retire Sanders‘ No. 2 jersey has stirred backlash from the Buffaloes’ fanbase.
Many believe the gesture is more about pleasing head coach Deion Sanders – Shedeur’s father – than about Shedeur‘s on-field achievements.
“What a complete joke. Hunter, MAYBE but Shedeur … I can’t understand how anyone takes this program seriously,” one fan posted on social media.
“Retiring an overhyped QB’s jersey is ridiculous when Kordell Stewart‘s jersey hasn’t even been retired,” another added.
Longtime Colorado supporters have pointed out that program legend Kordell Stewart, who led the Buffaloes to national prominence in the 1990s, has yet to receive the same honor.
“This is an absolute joke. Kordell Stewart deserves his jersey retired more than Sanders does. Straight up retired because of his daddy,” another fan commented.
Record-Breaking Stats vs. Program History
While the criticism has been fierce, Shedeur Sanders‘ production at Colorado is difficult to ignore.
Since transferring from Jackson State alongside his father, Sanders has rewritten the Buffaloes’ record books. He holds several school records, including, single-season passing yards, single-season passing touchdowns, single-season completion percentage and single-game passing yards (510 yards).
Sanders also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and finished in the top 10 of Heisman Trophy voting.
In fairness, Colorado football was in disarray before the arrival of Deion and Shedeur Sanders. The team won just one game in the season prior to their arrival.
With Sanders at quarterback and Hunter at receiver and cornerback, the Buffs became nationally relevant once again – dominating headlines and drawing record TV ratings.
An Emotional Sendoff or Premature Tribute?
Despite the accolades, many fans feel jersey retirement should be reserved for players with championship success or all-time program status.
Rashaan Salaam, Bobby Anderson, Joe Romig, and Byron White are the only other Colorado players with retired jerseys – and it took decades for them to receive that honor.
Now, only months after his final college game, Shedeur Sanders will see his jersey hang in Folsom Field – a move many view as rushed and driven by optics rather than legacy.
Regardless of the backlash, Sanders will soon leave Boulder behind, likely as a first-round pick in the upcoming draft. The New York Giants have hosted him for a workout, and other NFL teams remain interested.
But back in Colorado, the debate over his jersey retirement is sure to linger long after draft night fades.
