“No compito contra otra persona,lo hago contra mí misma“. Son palabras de la ultraterrestre Courtney Dauwalter, la mejor corredora de trail de todos los tiempos. La estadounidense ha ganado todo lo ganable. Desde 2019 ha sido primera en 28 de las 30 carreras que ha disputado. Es la reina de la ultradistancia. Capaz de conquistar tres carreras de 100 millas en 69 días: Western States (100 millas/160 km por la Sierra Nevada de California), Hardrock (102,5 millas/165 km) y Ultra Trail del Mont Blanc (171 kilómetros).
La búsqueda de nuevos retos la van a llevar este próximo 5 de mayo a tomar la salida en la Cocodona 250, una carrera de 250 millas (402 kilómetros) que conecta algunos de los senderos y pueblos más emblemáticos de Arizona.
“Hay algo irresistible en estas distancias extremadamente largas. Tengo mucha curiosidad por todas las piezas del rompecabezas que se unen cuando la carrera se hace tan larga. Pero me pregunto: ¿seré capaz de manejarlos? ¿Cómo resolveré los problemas a lo largo del camino? ¿Cómo me sentiré la segunda noche, el tercer día, la tercera noche? ¿Cuantas noches habrá? Será su primera experencia en un recorrido tan largo. Ha llegado hasta las 200 millas (320 km), pero no más allá. Exprofesora de Ciencias en un colegio, empezó en el esquí de fondo. Sus resultados en la nieve le dieron una beca para estudiar Magisterio en la Universidad de Denver. “En secundaria comencé a concentrarme más en el campo a través y en la pista, y descubrí que realmente me encantaba poder esforzarme en las carreras. Desde entonces, correr ha sido una actividad habitual para mí como una forma de aclarar mi mente”, explica.
Dejó la pista y se marchó al asfalto para correr maratones y, poco a poco, aumentó la distancia hasta llegar sumar kilómetros por centenas. Cuando planificó su 2025 tuvo claro que quería correr más distancia que nunca. En 2021 había tomado contacto con la Cocodona. Acudió para acompañar a unos amigos y ayudarles en algunos tramos. Con ese conocimiento previo, se decantó por esta cita en la que Sarah Ostaszewski ostenta el récord femenino (72h50:27), establecido en 2023.
Courtney Dauwalter: el tránsito por la cueva del dolor
Le preocupa cómo gestionar el sueño y la alimentación, pero le pueden más las ganas por afrontar este reto y transitar por la cueva del dolor, como ella define ese momento en el que las baterías están a punto de agotarse. “Quiero explorar ese lugar, ver qué hay en el fondo una y otra vez para eso te tenías que esforzar al límite“, reconoce. Todavía en plena preparación, se probó en la Crown King Scramble (50 km, 2.080 metros de desnivel positivo). Victoria y récord de la prueba con 4h19:49 y segunda en la clasificación total entre hombres y mujeres.
Dauwalter ha terminado entre las tres primeras en el 77% de las 96 carreras que ha disputado desde su debut en la Prickly Pear 50K en marzo de 2011 (60 victorias, 9 segundos puestos y 5 terceros), según recoge el sitio web ultrasignup.com.
