WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Even after back-to-back 4-13 seasons and with a new coach for the second straight year, Robert Kraft isn’t shying away from lofty expectations. The New England Patriots owner has always been an optimist and shared Tuesday that the ongoing roster turnover under Mike Vrabel hasn’t dampened his goal for the coming season.

“To make the playoffs,” Kraft said plainly when asked what would make the 2025 season successful.
Optimism from a franchise owner is hardly new or surprising. And Kraft has always been hopeful about his team’s prospects, perhaps buoyed by the dynastic run under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
But his rosy outlook stands out given the rebuild the Patriots are currently mired in, left to overhaul a roster that was among the worst in the NFL last season while trying to improve their recent woes in the draft.
“I’ll get chastised for saying it, but I think we’re ahead of that,” Kraft said of whether the Patriots are still at ground zero of their rebuild. “I think we have some real talent in the locker room. I think we’re privileged now to have a head coach that has learning-curve experience and has really come in and created a great atmosphere. I remember him as a player and his competitive attitude. He has grown as an individual in terms of having that edge but also being able to build a sense of team and cooperation. It’s unusual when every part of the building feels that he’s someone they can relate to, and he’s cooperating and he’s putting the team first. It’s really created a great sense of camaraderie.”

External expectations for the Patriots are far lower than what Kraft expressed, and organizationally, they know this rebuild will take time. They still don’t have a left tackle to protect Drake Maye’s blind side. Even with Stefon Diggs in the fold, their wide receiver group would rank among the bottom 10 in the NFL. The offensive line is in that category, too.
But Kraft didn’t hide behind dim prospects. He said his expectations for this season are greater than a year ago.

“I think that’s fair, yes,” Kraft said. “Ever since I’ve owned the team, the objectives were for the team to make the playoffs. Because once you make the playoffs, anything can happen. I think we have experience over the last few decades of seeing how that happens. …
“The bottom line is winning games. These last two years have been brutal, really. I wanted to try to do whatever I could to get back to a system and a situation where we had hope and we had a chance to do anything. I really think we’re on that path now.”
