After defeating South Carolina in the tournament final, UConn Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma has just secured his 12th NCAA national championship in his already legendary career.

Auriemma has been at the helm for 40 seasons and is now 71 years old, so he has openly said he may have a few more years before retiring, though no one knows for sure how much time he has left before stepping away from the historic program he built.
Caitlin Clark predicts Geno Auriemma’s farewell
With the national title win in 2025, it might seem like a good time to retire, but it was none other than Caitlin Clark who shared her thoughts on the matter and on Coach Auriemma.
The WNBA star was asked during her appearance on the Bird & Taurasi Show when she thought the right time would be for the legendary coach to retire, to which she responded: “It’s a tough question… this is year 40. He got through Paige. I think he’s got a soft spot for Azzi [Fudd], I really think he does. I think he coaches one more after this with Azzi and then maybe he heads out.”

It’s intriguing to consider that Auriemma might not say goodbye just yet and could do so next year because of Azzi Fudd, though only the coach himself holds the final verdict. In the end, his legacy within NCAA basketball is immense.
What did Auriemma say after the win?
“Well, it’s amazing to have three players, three people like that on the same team,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “And Sarah, you would think Sarah was graduating the way she plays, right? All three of them complement each other so well. They all have such unique skill sets.”
Bueckers capped her stellar career with the Huskies’ first championship since 2016, ending a nine-year title drought for the team. That was the longest for Auriemma and his Huskies since the team won its first championship in 1995 led by Rebecca Lobo.
Since then, the Huskies have had dominant championship runs – in the early 2000s led by Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, in 2009-10 with Maya Moore, and during the four straight from 2013-16 with Breanna Stewart. All were in attendance in Florida on Sunday to see the Huskies’ latest title.
