Eisenach in Thüringen ist bekannt durch die Wartburg, als „Lutherstadt“ und als Geburtsort von Johann Sebastian Bach. Sportlich gilt der ThSV Eisenach aus der Daikin Handball-Bundesliga als Aushängeschild der Stadt. Der Handball-Klub war und ist der Eisenacher Kommunal-Politik offenbar wichtig.
Im Juni 2024 schrieb die ehemalige Oberbürgermeisterin Katja Wolf (49/jetzt BSW, zuvor Die Linke) in der Beschlussvorlage 0013-StR/2024 des Stadtrats unter anderem: „Der ThSV ist für seine Fans eine Herzensangelegenheit, für die Stadt Eisenach ein wichtiger Standortfaktor. Der ThSV ist für seine Standortregion von wichtiger Bedeutung.“ Deshalb kommt der Klub in den Genuss von Vergünstigungen in der bei allen Gegner gefürchteten Werner-Aßmann-Halle.

So viel Hallenmiete zahlt ein Handball-Klub
Im betreffenden Beschlussvorschlag des Stadtrats steht: „Das Nutzungsentgelt für den Trainings- und Wettkampfbetrieb der ThSV Marketing GmbH in der Werner-Aßmann-Halle wird entgegen der aktuell gültigen Benutzungs- und Entgeltordnung für die Werner-Aßmann-Halle der Stadt Eisenach vom 18.12.2006 per Mietvertrag geregelt.“
Im Mietvertrag (Nummer: FB4_2023_158) zwischen der Stadt Eisenach und der ThSV Marketing GmbH wurde ein monatlicher Mietzins von 2380 Euro (inkl. 19 Prozent gesetzlicher Mehrwertsteuer) vereinbart, der Vertrag „läuft auf unbestimmte Zeit“.

Der Stadtrat wurde in betreffender Sitzung im nicht öffentlichen Teil aufgefordert, den Beschluss dazu zu fassen. Nicht bei allen Stadträten und Fraktionen stieß das auf Zustimmung. Grund: Der Mietvertrag hätte einen Erlass von angeblich weit mehr als 50.000 Euro pro Jahr zur Folge.
SPORT BILD hakte bei der ThSV Marketing GmbH nach. Deren Geschäftsführer René Witte sagt: „Das ist Angelegenheit des Stadtrats. Wir sind sehr froh, dass die Stadt uns als Bundesligaverein unterstützt und wir die Stadt bundesweit würdig vertreten dürfen.“
Das soll der Handball-Klub in Zukunft in der Wartburgarena „O1“ tun. Das ehemalige Stammwerk der BMW-Autoproduktion soll zu einer Multifunktionsarena für 4000 Zuschauer umgebaut werden, Kostenpunkt nach aktuellen Berechnungen rund 54 Millionen Euro.
[–>Der Ausschuss für Beteiligungen, Wirtschaft und Tourismus der Stadt Eisenach hat inzwischen empfohlen, „die Betreibung der Wartburgarena O1 vorerst durch die Stadt Eisenach in Eigenregie“ erfolgen zu lassen. Der Ausschuss stimmte mit sechs Stimmen dafür, es gab drei Enthaltungen und keine Gegenstimmen.
Heißt für den Handball-Klub: Er soll nach Fertigstellung der neuen Halle vorerst nicht Betreiber werden, sondern Mieter bleiben.
