Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells experienced a harrowing moment during Tuesday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets, leaving fans and players alike in stunned silence. The promising young player was stretchered off the court after a flagrant foul caused him to land hard on his back during a breakaway dunk attempt. The incident has raised concerns about his health and the impact on his standout rookie season.
The play unfolded in the second quarter when Wells, ahead of the Hornets’ defense, went up for what seemed to be an uncontested dunk. However, Charlotte rookie KJ Simpson collided with Wells mid-air, undercutting his legs and causing him to fall horizontally onto the court. Simpson immediately checked on Wells, but the Grizzlies rookie remained motionless, prompting medical staff to rush to his aid. Simpson was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game for “unnecessary and excessive contact.”

As Wells was wheeled off the court with his head and neck stabilized, the Spectrum Center crowd offered applause, and Wells raised a hand in acknowledgment, signaling hope for his recovery. His father, Fred Wells, later provided an update, revealing that Jaylen was “awake and alert” but suffering from a swollen wrist, facial injuries, and back pain. He is set to undergo X-rays and a CT scan to assess the extent of his injuries.
It’s never a good time for an injury
Wells has been one of the brightest stars of the 2024-25 rookie class, carving out a rotation spot for the playoff-contending Grizzlies after being selected 39th overall in the NBA Draft. Known for his defensive prowess, Wells has even been mentioned as a Rookie of the Year candidate, making his emergence as a second-round pick an enormous win for Memphis. His averages of 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game have been instrumental in the Grizzlies’ push for a playoff spot.
