Continúa el desembarco de los equipos ingleses en las categorías inferiores del fútbol español. En este caso le ha tocado el turno al Mérida. En un comunicado oficial, el equipo romano anuncia que Best Intentions Analytics Limited se hace con el 100% de las acciones del club. Es la empresa de Matthew Benham, propietario también del Brentford, ahora undécimo de la Premier League.
Durante la mañana del martes, el presidente del Brentford Cliff Crown había visitado al alcalde de la ciudad Antonio Rodríguez Osuna y al hasta ahora director general del club Alejandro Pérez. Formará el Consejo de Administración junto a Nity Raj y Phil Whall.
Así, Benham se convierte en accionista mayoritario y Brentford y Mérida compartirán presidente. Benham fue vicepresidente del Bank of America, es propietario de la casa de apuestas Matchbook y fundó la empresa Smartodds, que se dedica a la investigación estadística. Es graduado en Física y se le conoce por su enfoque basado en el análisis de datos. Decidió invertir en el Brentford, su equipo de la infancia, en 2007, y su apoyo financiero lo llevó a la Premier League por primera vez en su historia en 2021.
Un Mérida que mira al fútbol profesional
Además, no es la primera vez que Benham explora una asociación con otro club. Hasta 2023, era accionista mayoritario del Midtjylland danés, con participaciones en competiciones europeas. Emprendió esa aventura en 2014, y en esos diez años ganó tres ligas danesas. Las negociaciones con el Mérida apuntaban primero a una colaboración al estilo de la que el Aston Villa mantiene con el Real Unión de Irún gracias a los Emery: participación minoritaria, construcción de estrategias en común y préstamo de jugadores. Sin embargo, las últimas reuniones han cambiado el rumbo del acuerdo.
Hasta ahora, el Mérida era propiedad de Mark Heffernan. Este empresario británico adquirió la totalidad de las acciones del club a finales de 2021, hizo frente a las deudas y consolidó la estructura a nivel deportivo para que pudiera aspirar al regreso al fútbol profesional. No en vano, ahora mismo el Mérida ocupa la quinta posición en el grupo 2 de Primera Federación, lo que le valdría para acceder a los ‘playoffs’ de ascenso a LaLiga Hypermotion.
