Shedeur Sanders’s draft stock continues to plummet. Once considered a top-three prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft, the former Colorado star has been slipping in analysts’ predictions, to the point where he is now considered the third-best quarterback prospect, surpassed by none other than Jaxson Dart.
With the draft 10 days away, former Miami Hurricanes star Cam Ward is the favorite to become the first overall pick, courtesy of the Tennessee Titans. Until a couple of months ago, Sanders was the second-best candidate; the only thing left to know was whether he would be taken by the Cleveland Browns, second overall, or the New York Giants, third overall.
However, as the weeks passed, some negative reports about Sanders began to emerge. Rumors swirled that NFL scouts and executives considered him “brash” and “arrogant,” while scouting reports began to cast doubt on whether his talent was enough to warrant a first-rounder.
Jax has already surpassed Shedeur in the evaluations
This week, Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer revealed, “I’m having a really hard time finding coaches and scouts who believe Sanders is a first-round talent.” He clarified that no one has anything personal against the son of the legendary Deion Sanders, but the recruiters are concerned about what they’ve seen on tape.
“What I keep hearing,” Breer explained, “is that he [Sanders] isn’t a great athlete on tape, doesn’t have exceptional arm talent, and too often does things that simply won’t translate to the NFL game.” Furthermore, the reporter explained that one coach in particular sees the most potential in Dart.
“The coach I was talking to said, simply, that when you watch those two under duress on tape, you see Dart moving forward and Sanders moving backward,” Breer revealed. “It’s a small thing, but to this coach, it was an example of how Dart’s game can translate to the NFL better.”
What’s next for Sanders in the draft?
While nothing is set in stone, recent mock drafts have devalued Sanders from the second or third pick to the ninth pick by the New Orleans Saints, or even as low as the 21st pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The most recent analysis explains that the Saints could sign Sanders to back up starter Derek Carr, who will miss the first few weeks of the regular season due to injury. However, the only way to know who will select the former Buffaloes star will be to wait until draft night.
