Draft intrigue is in full swing for the New York Giants as the team is preparing to hold a private workout with quarterback Shedeur Sanders in Colorado on Thursday, team and league sources told The Athletic.
Holding the No. 3 pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft and needing a long-term solution at quarterback, the Giants are expected to do their due diligence on every possible quarterback option ahead of the draft.

Sanders is the second-ranked quarterback in “The Beast” by The Athletic’s draft expert Dane Brugler, with only Miami’s Cam Ward ahead of him. Ward is the favorite to be selected with the No. 1 pick by the Tennessee Titans. The Giants sent a large contingent to Colorado for the school’s pro day on April 5 — to watch both Sanders and cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter.
In an appearance on “Scoop City” last week, Brugler wondered about the Giants potentially taking the best player available at No. 3 and then positioning themselves to draft Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart — either in the second round or trading back into the first round for him.
This offseason, New York has signed veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, with Wilson expected to be the starting quarterback for coach Brian Daboll. In last year’s 3-14 campaign, the Giants started three quarterbacks: Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito. Only DeVito remains after Jones was released last season (and has since signed with the Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts) and Lock signed last week with the Seattle Seahawks.
The last-minute workout adds an interesting wrinkle only 10 days before the draft. Two weeks ago at the NFL annual league meetings, general manager Joe Schoen said, “We set it up where we don’t have to (take a quarterback at No. 3). We can go several different directions. Ultimately, in theory … you want to put them in there and say, ‘Hey, here’s our franchise quarterback for the next 15 years.’ There’s got to be one available, and they’ve got to check a lot of boxes.”
Schoen later added that the team was not going to force the selection of a quarterback with the third pick, saying, “As we do our homework, if there’s not a guy, taking one to check the box — if it’s not the guy — that’s not a good plan.”

Giants full of intrigue in lead-up to draft
While Schoen’s comments last month left the impression that it’s less likely the franchise uses its No. 3 pick on a quarterback, the Giants are certainly keeping things interesting in the final countdown to the draft. The Giants sent a large travel party to Colorado’s pro day, and with this latest update, we’re left to wonder how interested the front office and coaches are in Sanders. Is that interest strong enough to make Sanders the franchise’s face of the future?
They’re in a fascinating position, given the heightened heat from co-owner John Mara’s season-ending comments and the moves they made this offseason in signing Wilson and Winston. While those quarterback signings shouldn’t preclude the team from drafting a rookie, it’s all a matter of whether the brass believes in Sanders. — Charlotte Carroll, Giants beat writer
