Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons is in a situation many NFL players can relate to: awaiting a much-anticipated contract extension.
But unlike some players who might hold out or demand immediate action, Parsons is staying focused and committed to his team, continuing to report for team activities while patiently waiting for his payday.
Parsons‘ situation is strikingly similar to that of quarterback Dak Prescott a few years ago. Back then, Prescott also faced uncertainty regarding his contract, yet he chose to keep working hard and never held out. Eventually, Prescott was rewarded with a historic contract, and he now advises Parsons to take a similar approach.
What did Prescott say?
At a recent Children’s Cancer Fund gala, Prescott shared his perspective on the matter. While he didn’t have a concrete timeline for Parsons‘ deal, Prescott urged the young linebacker to stay positive and trust the process.
“I don’t have the full answer for it or I think all of mine would’ve been done a lot earlier than they were,” Prescott admitted.
“For him, just stay positive. Understand and make sure that his team knows what he wants and what he believes.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, known for his somewhat slow contract negotiations, has made it clear that he wants to lock Parsons down for the long term. Speaking at the NFL league meetings, Jones praised Parsons’ vast potential.
“In every aspect of Micah, he’s got great potential to do more,” Jones remarked.
“He is so capable mentally that he could make us all follow him a little bit.”
However, Jones also noted that he wants complete satisfaction before sealing the deal, emphasizing that it’s not just about the money but ensuring Parsons is fully committed to the Cowboys’ future.
Since entering the NFL in 2021, Parsons has been nothing short of spectacular. A four-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, he was also named Rookie of the Year and has received Defensive Player of the Year votes in each of his first four seasons. His dominant performances have made him one of the league’s top defensive players and an invaluable asset to the Cowboys’ defense.
The key question now is whether Dallas will strike a long-term deal with Parsons before the upcoming season or if the negotiations will continue into the next year.
