Angel City FC has named Alexander Straus as its next head coach, effective June 1.
Straus, 49, has been coaching in Europe since 2010. The Norwegian most recently has been the head coach of FC Bayern Munich Women, hired in July 2022.
His Bayern teams won consecutive Frauen-Bundesliga championships in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons and is competing for a third straight. Bayern are eight points ahead of second-placed Wolfsburg with three league matches remaining.

“When we set out to hire our head coach, we looked for specific characteristics such as a dominant style of play, a proven winner at the highest level, a focus on player development, a collaborative mindset, and a leader in high performance,” said Mark Parsons, Angel City’s sporting director.
“Alex fits this profile at every measure. He has consistently demonstrated an ability to unite teams under a shared purpose, inspire players to grow and perform at their peak, and deliver results consistently. I’m truly confident Alex’s experience, commitment to team culture, and tactical intelligence will strengthen our foundation as we aim to bring championships to Los Angeles.”
Angel City fired head coach Becki Tweed in December following a 7-13-6 record in 2024. Sam Laity is serving as interim coach and has Angel City off to a 2-0-2 (8 points) start, good for fourth in the National Women’s Soccer League standings.
Straus also has coached Norway’s U-23 and U-19 women’s teams.
He will be joining Angel City with plenty of matches left on the schedule. The regular seasons runs through Nov. 1.
