Velký dříč a bojovník se na nejvyšší úrovni dokázal prosadit i se svou výškou 178 centimetrů. Zlínský odchovanec strávil v mateřském klubu většinu kariéry. „Nejraději vzpomínám samozřejmě na titul. Zvednout pohár doma před skvělými fanoušky, po boku spoluhráčů z mládí a taky těch, ke kterým jsem vzhlížel v dětství. Co může být víc?“ vyprávěl v rozhovoru pro klubový web Beranů.
Okál se vypracoval v jednoho z lídrů. Ovšem společně s propadem celého týmu přišel pokles i jeho bodové produkce. Po zlínském pádu do první ligy zkusil Okál štěstí v Přerově, následně si ho v nejvyšší soutěži vyhlédla Kometa, kde působil ještě na podzim aktuální sezony.
Na závěr posledního ročníku se však vrátil domů. „Začátek pro mě byl těžký, bylo to celkově nahoru dolu. Kupila se zranění. Pak jsem si užíval návrat do Zlína, kde to všechno začalo,“ pochvaloval si
„Vždycky jsem se chtěl vrátit. Chtěl jsem tu poslední sezonu dohrát doma. Dostával jsem spoustu prostoru a zkusil jsem pomoct k postupu do extraligy. To se nepodařilo, ale můžeme být na letošní sezonu hrdí. Pořád je pro mne ctí, že končím s medailí na krku,“ hodnotil.

V prvním finálovém utkání Maxa ligy proti Jihlavě se dočkal gólu. „Na tohle určitě nezapomenu. Hned jsem měl v hlavně myšlenku, že to je možná poslední trefa,“ podotýkal.
O další průběh série ho navíc připravil zánět středního ucha. „Po druhém utkání jsem skoro neslyšel. Stihl jsem se dát dohromady aspoň na poslední zápas, ale zasáhl jsem do něj jen krátce,“ líčil.
Že aktuální ročník bude jeho poslední, se rozhodl už v jeho průběhu. „Byl to vývoj. Při každém zranění přicházely myšlenky na konec. A letos se to kupilo. Problémy se žebry, rameny, minulý rok operace. A s tím vším už to není ono. Zároveň jsem viděl, že už se kácí v našem lese, tak to k tomu spělo,“ smál se Okál. „Už je na čase. Byla to skvělá jízda, kdy od dětství byl hokej všude kolem mne, ale nyní už chci trochu zvolnit,“ podotkl.
Prozatím tak končí úspěšný rok Okálů. Za Zlín totiž válel také otec Zdeněk Okál starší i strýc Miroslav Okál. Třeba ale tuto jmenovku na dresu ještě ve žluto-modrém dresu uvidíme. „Mám doma dva kluky, kteří hokej hrají, tak samozřejmě budu sledovat hlavně je,“ usmál se nyní už bývalý křídelník.
Čemu se plánuje věnovat po kariéře, však zatím neprozradil. „Teď si chci hlavně odpočinout od hokeje a věnovat se manželce i dětem. Po čase se uvidí, zatím nad tím vůbec nepřemýšlím. Kamarádi už mě přemlouvají, abych si šel příští rok zahrát za hobbíky, ale na to je ještě čas,“ doplnil Okál.
Se Zlínem se kromě něj loučí také další dva odchovanci, obránci Jiří Suhrada a Patrik Urbanec, kteří vyhlížejí nové angažmá.
